Job Summary
The Level 2 Endodontist provides enhanced primary care endodontic services within an NHS setting, managing patients with more complex root canal treatment needs that fall beyond Level 1 (general dental practice) but do not require specialist or hospital-based care. The role supports improved patient access, reduced waiting times, and high-quality clinical outcomes in line with NHS commissioning standards.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
- Deliver Level 2 endodontic care, including:
- Management of moderately complex root canal cases
- Re-treatment of failed endodontic cases (non-surgical)
- Assessment and triage of referrals
- Provide high-quality, evidence-based care in accordance with:
- NICE guidelines
- NHS England commissioning standards
- Maintain accurate, contemporaneous clinical records
- Obtain valid informed consent and ensure patient-centered care
- Identify cases requiring escalation to Level 3 (specialist/hospital services)
Referral Management
- Accept and assess referrals from GDPs (General Dental Practitioners)
- Communicate clearly with referring clinicians regarding:
- Treatment plans
- Outcomes and follow-up recommendations
- Ensure appropriate discharge back to referring practitioner
Quality & Governance
- Participate in clinical audit and peer review activities
- Contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives
- Adhere to infection prevention and control protocols
- Comply with NHS clinical governance, safeguarding, and data protection policies
Education & Support
- Provide mentorship and informal support to Level 1 practitioners where appropriate
- Engage in continuing professional development (CPD)
- Contribute to local training or case discussions
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- BDS or equivalent dental qualification
- Full registration with the General Dental Council (GDC)
- NHS Performer Number
- Evidence of enhanced skills in endodontics (e.g., postgraduate certificate/diploma or equivalent experience)
- Experience managing moderately complex endodontic cases
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
Desirable Criteria
- MSc or Diploma in Endodontics
- Experience working within NHS referral pathways
- Participation in audit, teaching, or research
- Use of advanced endodontic technologies (e.g., rotary systems, apex locators, CBCT interpretation)
