Chesworth Construction Ltd is an established and growing principal contractor delivering a diverse range of residential, commercial and public sector construction projects across Shropshire and Mid Wales. Our projects typically range from £50,000 to £1 million+, giving the successful candidate exposure to a wide variety of sectors, procurement routes and construction methods.
Due to continued growth, we are looking to recruit an Estimator / Quantity Surveyor to join our commercial team. Working directly alongside the Company Director, this hands-on role offers genuine responsibility, variety and long-term career progression within a growing business.
The Role
This role is ideal for an experienced Estimator or Quantity Surveyor who enjoys both pre-construction and commercial management and is looking to take on greater responsibility within a growing contractor.
You will play a key role in securing new work, supporting live projects and helping drive the continued growth of the business.
Key Responsibilities
Tendering & Pre-Construction
- Carry out detailed take-offs from drawings using Bluebeam or similar software.
- Prepare quantities and price tender submissions.
- Issue and manage subcontractor and supplier enquiries.
- Liaise with subcontractors and suppliers to obtain and chase quotations.
- Scrutinise subcontractor and supplier quotations, ensuring they are commercially competitive, technically compliant and fully in accordance with the project specification and scope of works.
- Analyse and compare quotations, making recommendations for appointment.
- Prepare and build up rates using supplier quotations, subcontractor returns and historic cost data.
- Prepare material schedules and obtain supplier quotations.
- Procure materials, negotiate supplier pricing and prepare purchase orders to achieve best value.
- Manage the onboarding of subcontractors, including reviewing quotations, confirming scope, obtaining compliance documentation and preparing subcontract and purchase order information prior to appointment.
- Prepare complete and competitive tender submissions within required deadlines.
Commercial & Live Projects
- Prepare monthly valuations, applications for payment and associated commercial documentation.
- Support the commercial management of projects from pre-construction through to final account.
- Procure subcontractors and materials throughout the project lifecycle.
- Review subcontractor applications for payment and prepare payment certificates.
- Liaise with the accounts team regarding purchase orders, invoices and cost tracking.
- Monitor project costs, variations, retentions and final accounts.
- Monitor project budgets and identify commercial risks and opportunities.
About You
We're looking for someone who is commercially minded, proactive and enjoys taking ownership of their work.
Essential
- 4+ years' experience in an Estimating and/or Quantity Surveying role.
- Experience working for a main contractor or SME contractor.
- Ability to carry out take-offs independently.
- Experience using Bluebeam or similar take-off software.
- Experience pricing construction projects.
- Good understanding of construction methods, sequencing and procurement.
- Confident communicating with subcontractors, suppliers and clients.
- Strong commercial awareness with excellent attention to detail.
- Excellent organisational and time management skills.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
- Experience preparing valuations, subcontractor payments and cost reporting.
- HNC/HND or Degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management or a related discipline (preferred but not essential).
