We’re looking for a passionate, creative and motivated Junior Communications Officer to join our busy and expanding Communications and Marketing Team at Medway Council. About the role
In this varied and fast‑paced role, you’ll support the delivery of engaging marketing and communications campaigns that promote the work of our Regeneration, Culture and Environment (RCE) Directorate. The portfolio could include areas such as:

Culture, heritage and events

Libraries, Archives and Greenspaces

Frontline services, including Housing, Parking, Highways and Active Travel

Community initiatives and consultations
No two days will be the same.
What you’ll be doing
Working directly with the Marketing Manager and the Press Office, and closely with the wider Communications team, you’ll:

Support the delivery of multichannel marketing and communications campaigns (ATL & BTL)

Create engaging content for press articles, social media, video, print, reports and publications — including Medway Matters

Work with the Press Office on launch events or media briefings to help secure coverage

Support community engagement activities, consultations and events

Help deliver strategic marketing communications plans

Liaise confidently with internal teams, agencies, partners and community groups

Manage a busy and varied workload, balancing reactive and proactive communications

Ensure all activity aligns with the council’s brand and communication standards

About you
We’re looking for someone who brings curiosity, creativity and organisation in equal measure. You’ll ideally:

Have experience working on communications or marketing campaigns (public sector experience is a plus)

Have an understanding or experience of what makes a good press release and/or how to secure media coverage

Be an excellent copywriter with an eye for detail

Have experience using a range of marketing channels and formats
-
Be confident juggling priorities and meeting deadlines
-
Communicate clearly and professionally with a wide range of audiences
-
Hold a relevant degree (or equivalent experience)
-
Bring fresh ideas, enthusiasm and a genuine interest in making a difference
Good admin skills and strong time management are essential — this is a role where organisation really matters.

Career Progression Frameworks (CPF) have been introduced for all roles at Medway Council. These frameworks provide a mechanism for employees to take ownership of their development within their post and be rewarded accordingly. The salary you will be offered will be at level A. There will be further opportunity once in post to progress from level A to B, and B to C.

The person specification of a job profile is split into three levels:
Level A details the essential criteria that all applicants must be able to demonstrate through their application and interview.
Level B details the developed competencies that an individual who is practised in this role would be able to demonstrate and will be a progression of knowledge, experience and skills from level A.
Level C requires the highest level of competence and applicants would need to fully meet and demonstrate all aspects of the job profile, including qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience.
We are seeking a Junior Communications Officer to join the team at level A. This is the entry point of the role, so you will need to be able to demonstrate the relevant knowledge, experience and skills to get you started, but you will be supported to develop in your role through induction, probation and a supportive Performance Appraisal and Career Conversation. All elements of level A listed within the person specification are essential. Through your induction you will be introduced to the Career Progression Framework (CPF), which will help you to identify your areas of strength and any development needs.
