Senior Banking Policy Advisor

Division: Supervision, Policy and Competition
Department: Retail Banking

Salary: National (Edinburgh and Leeds) ranging from £53,800 to £71,600 and London £59,200 to £78,800 per annum (Salary offered will be based on skills and experience)

About the FCA and team

We regulate financial services firms in the UK, to keep financial markets fair, thriving and effective. By joining us, you’ll play a key part in protecting consumers, driving economic growth, and shaping the future of UK finance services.

SPC oversees firms and individuals (supervision), creates and reviews the rules by which they operate (policy) and identifies and remedies ineffective competition in markets (competition). The Retail Banking Directorate oversees supervision and policy for UK retail banking and mortgages, driving better outcomes for consumers including those with vulnerabilities - through firm-specific, sector-wide, and event-driven work, with a clear focus on fairness, affordability, and consumer protection.

Role responsibilities

Coordinate and deliver key policy projects using first-rate analysis and project management skills
Develop effective working relationships across the FCA and represent the FCA externally with government departments like HM Treasury, industry participants, trade bodies and other regulators
Write and present policy proposals, supported by data and analysis, to help decision makers in the FCA make decisions
Deliver public consultations on changes to FCA rules or guidance
Provide technical and policy advice on the application of the existing rules and guidance
Research and analyse industry developments (e.g. new products and business models) and advise on their regulatory treatment
Provide advice and briefing about policy issues to FCA senior management and colleagues

Skills required

Minimum:

Demonstrable experience of policymaking and solving complex problems by analysing information or issues, methodically interpreting data and reaching robust conclusions
Prior experience of delivery and project management skills

Essential:

An ability to identify and manage key stakeholders, building rapport and constructive relationships, and demonstrating political awareness
Highly developed written and oral communication skills, able to explain complex issues succinctly and with clarity
Well-developed organisational skills, delivering multiple tasks with tight deadlines
An ability to contribute effectively, to take a collaborative and responsive to different situations approach, using well-reasoned arguments and challenge where appropriate
An ability to identify and manage key stakeholders, building rapport and constructive relationships, and demonstrating political awareness
