The Librarian and Literacy Coordinator plays a pivotal strategic role in promoting a culture of reading, learning, and academic excellence across the school. This position combines the effective management of the library and learning resource centre with the leadership of whole-school literacy initiatives, ensuring that all students are supported in developing the reading, writing, and communication skills necessary for success. The role is centred on enhancing student outcomes by embedding literacy across the curriculum and fostering a lifelong love of reading within an inclusive and engaging learning environment.
As a leader of literacy, the postholder works collaboratively with teaching staff and senior leaders to design, implement, and evaluate a whole-school literacy strategy that raises standards and supports student progress across all subject areas. They provide guidance and professional support to colleagues on effective literacy teaching practices, ensuring consistent approaches to reading, writing, and oracy. Through targeted interventions and the monitoring of student progress, the role ensures that all learners, including those requiring additional support, are able to access the curriculum and achieve their full potential.
In their capacity as Librarian, the postholder is responsible for the strategic development and day-to-day management of the library as a dynamic learning hub. This includes curating a diverse and inclusive range of resources that support both the curriculum and students’ wider reading interests, as well as creating an environment that promotes independent learning, curiosity, and intellectual engagement. The Librarian and Literacy Coordinator actively encourages reading for pleasure through initiatives such as reading programmes, author visits, literacy events, and student-led activities, helping to build a vibrant reading culture across the school community.
Overall, this role is integral to driving forward literacy standards while maintaining an innovative and accessible library service. The Librarian and Literacy Coordinator serves as a champion for literacy and learning, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to develop essential skills, discover the joy of reading, and thrive in a supportive and resource-rich educational environment.
