The Senior Technical Authority will act as the primary authority for all technical activities within a programme and will support technical development, build, testing integration and operational teams throughout the programme lifecycle.
What you will be doing
Systems Integration & Delivery

Working closely with Programme Managers, Solution and Spiral Architects and Engineers, Operations Managers you will oversee integration of:

Each vessel built or allocated to the programme
-
All payloads or capabilities delivered by subcontractors
-
Mission and data-management software systems from third parties
-
Ensure all technical deliverables are received, validated, integrated, and verified against programme requirements.

Lead technical acceptance activities for subcontractor and internal deliverables.
-
Ensure interoperability and coherent operation across all hardware, software, communications, and sensing systems.
Engineering Assurance

Establish and maintain systems engineering governance, including:

Requirements management
-
Interface management
-
Verification & validation
-
Integration planning
-
Technical risk management
-
Defect and issue resolution
-
Lead technical reviews, engineering baseline establishment and configuration management
-
Ensure systems continue to perform effectively throughout testing, deployment, and operational phases.

Lead root-cause analysis and resolution of complex technical issues.
Stakeholder & Supplier Management
-
Act as the primary technical interface from the Programme to defence customers, subcontractors, and internal engineering teams.

Provide technical leadership across software, electronics, maritime, autonomy, and sensor disciplines.
-
Challenge suppliers and internal teams to ensure technical quality, delivery maturity, and programme readiness.

Support programme management in balancing technical risk, schedule, and cost.
Technical Escalation & Leadership

Serve as the senior technical escalation point for programme issues.

Chair technical reviews, design reviews, and engineering decision forums.

Mentor and guide multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Support bid activities, technical strategy, and future capability development where required.

Set the standard and expectations across programmes to ensure the proper technical quality/cost/schedule/risk balance is delivered to the programmes and our customers.

Champion innovation and process improvement initiatives to ensure the organisation continues to be efficient, data-informed, and outcome-driven

Provide technical mentorship to team members

Champion engineering excellence, systems thinking, and design integrity, ensuring our technology meets the demands of complex marine environments.
Who you are
-
Significant experience delivering complex defence or maritime systems programmes.
-
Proven experience of holding accountability and successfully delivering across the full lifecycle (architecture, requirements, design, integration, V&V, commissioning, operation, sustainment, retirement)
-
Strong systems engineering background with experience across hardware, software, and integrated platforms.
-
Experience acting as: Technical Authority, Chief Engineer. Systems Authority, Lead Systems Engineer or Engineering Manager on complex programmes.
-
Experience managing subcontractor technical delivery and integration.
-
Experience with maritime systems, autonomous systems, sonar/sensor technologies, or defence mission systems.
-
Proven capability leading integration, verification, and acceptance activities.
-
Experience managing technical risk and resolving high-severity engineering issues.
-
Strong understanding of systems engineering lifecycle processes.
Desirable
- Experiences as a lead in multi-million pound defence programmes

Experience with unmanned or remotely operated maritime platforms.

Knowledge of defence standards and assurance frameworks.
-
Experience in naval, subsea, autonomy, or acoustic sensing domains.
-
Familiarity with secure software and data systems.
-
Chartered Engineer status or equivalent.
Salary: The salary varies for this position as we are recruiting in multiple regional locations and job grades. The salary process is based on skills, abilities, and experience required.
