Applications Engineer / Technical Sales Engineer
Location: Assentech Sales Limited
Role type: Full time
Career level: Developing engineer / technically capable early career professional / applications specialist
The Role
Assentech Sales Limited is looking for a technically capable and commercially aware Applications Engineer to support the continued growth of our specialist engineering business.
This is a high value opportunity for an individual with strong engineering judgement, analytical ability and the ambition to develop into a key technical role within the company. The successful candidate will work closely with our Managing Director and senior leadership team, supporting customer applications, technical specifications, product selection, project development and commercial proposals.
Assentech supplies safety critical equipment, technical services and engineered solutions for industrial process, tank storage, environmental compliance and process safety applications. Our work requires more than product knowledge. It requires an understanding of how equipment performs in real operating conditions, how systems interact, and how the correct specification can influence safety, reliability, emissions, compliance and asset integrity.
Every enquiry must be assessed on its own technical merit. The role requires the ability to interpret customer requirements, understand the process conditions, review technical data, identify application risks and develop a suitable engineered response. This is not a transactional sales role. It is an applications-focused engineering position with a strong customer and commercial interface.
The right person will understand engineering principles and be confident working with technical information. They will have the ability to think logically, ask precise questions and recognise where detail matters. A strong foundation in mechanical engineering, physics and mathematics is essential. A Mechanical Engineering degree, or strong A Levels in physics and mathematics, would be highly advantageous.
This role could suit a capable early career engineer who wants exposure to technical sales, process equipment, specification work and real industrial applications. It could also suit someone already working in an engineering support, applications, technical estimating or project support role who wants to develop into a broader and more influential position.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Interpreting customer enquiries, technical specifications, datasheets, drawings and application requirements to establish the correct scope of supply.
- Understanding process conditions, operating parameters, media characteristics, pressure and vacuum requirements, environmental considerations, project urgency and site specific constraints.
- Asking technically relevant questions to clarify the application, challenge assumptions and ensure the proposed solution is suitable for the duty.
- Supporting the selection and specification of specialist equipment and services for tank storage, process safety, emissions control and industrial applications.
- Preparing technically accurate and commercially structured quotations based on customer requirements, supplier input, project scope and internal pricing models.
- Liaising with manufacturers, principal suppliers and technical departments to obtain pricing, lead times, performance data, compliance information and bespoke engineering support.
- Working closely with the Managing Director and senior management to develop engineered proposals, service packages and technical solutions.
- Supporting the external sales function with application review, product selection, technical clarification and proposal development.
- Reviewing customer documentation requirements, certification expectations, compliance needs and project deliverables at the enquiry stage.
- Understanding and discussing commercial terms, payment conditions, delivery requirements, INCOTERMS, documentation obligations and project risks prior to order placement.
- Maintaining professional communication with customers, suppliers and internal teams to ensure technical and commercial alignment throughout the sales process.
- Following up quotations and technical proposals in a structured and professional manner to progress opportunities and convert them into orders.
- Using the CRM system to record enquiry history, technical notes, customer interactions, competitor intelligence and opportunity development.
- Supporting logistics coordination, delivery planning and supplier communication where required.
- Contributing to internal procedures, quality management processes and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Managing workload, priorities and agreed KPIs with a high level of personal accountability.
About You
We are looking for an individual with genuine engineering capability, intellectual curiosity and the motivation to develop.
You should be comfortable working with technical detail and capable of applying engineering logic to real world applications. You will need to understand that the correct solution is not always found in a catalogue. It often requires careful review of operating conditions, customer expectations, site constraints, compliance requirements and the consequences of poor specification.
You may be at the early stages of your career, but you should already demonstrate a strong technical mindset. You should be the type of person who wants to understand how things work, why equipment is selected, how systems behave and what happens when assumptions are wrong.
This role will suit someone who wants to become a trusted technical support to senior leadership and, over time, develop the competence to advise customers, support engineered solutions and contribute meaningfully to the growth of the business.
Essential Skills and Attributes
- Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles.
- A sound foundation in physics and mathematics.
- Ability to interpret technical specifications, datasheets, drawings and customer requirements.
- Strong analytical and problem solving ability.
- Ability to understand process conditions, operating parameters and application constraints.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Commercial awareness and the ability to understand project value, margin, delivery risk and payment terms.
- Confidence to engage with customers and ask technically relevant questions.
- Ability to prioritise multiple enquiries, manage workload and work to deadlines.
- Strong IT capability and ability to use CRM and business systems effectively.
- Professional, conscientious and proactive working style.
- Enthusiasm to learn, develop and take responsibility.
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative technical and commercial team.
Desirable Experience
- Mechanical Engineering degree or equivalent technical qualification.
- A Levels in physics and mathematics.
- Experience in technical sales, applications engineering, estimating, project engineering, mechanical design support or engineering support.
- Exposure to industrial process equipment, valves, pressure relief, tank storage, emissions control, fluid handling, mechanical systems or process safety.
- Hands on mechanical experience or practical understanding of equipment assembly, testing, maintenance or fault finding.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, technical schedules and project specifications.
- Familiarity with INCOTERMS, logistics, supplier coordination and customer documentation requirements.
- Experience working in an ISO 9001 quality management environment.
What We Offer
- Direct exposure to complex engineering applications and safety critical industrial equipment.
- The opportunity to work closely with our Managing Director and senior technical team, learning from decades of specialist industry experience.
- Structured training and ongoing development in products, applications, standards, compliance and commercial processes.
- A role with genuine technical variety, where each enquiry requires thought, judgement and application knowledge.
- The opportunity to support technologies and services that contribute to safety, emissions reduction, environmental responsibility and regulatory compliance.
- A clear development pathway for someone who wants to become a highly valued technical and commercial professional.
- A supportive, ambitious and collaborative team environment.
- The opportunity to become a key contributor within a growing specialist engineering business with global reach.
