The Role and Department
Durham’s Department of Music is one of the very best in the UK, and indeed worldwide, with an outstanding reputation for excellence in research and teaching. We attract exceptionally talented undergraduate, MA and doctoral students, and focus on high-quality research-led teaching. We have a thriving and supportive research culture, with funding from national and international research councils and foundations and a community of postdoctoral fellows in the Department. In student-facing guides and league tables we are regularly ranked among the top five Music Departments in the UK (for example, 1st in Complete University Guide 2026 and 2nd in the Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025). We have internationally renowned research strengths in musicology, theory and analysis, music technology and computational musicology, music psychology, ethnomusicology, composition, and performance. Teaching Fellowships offer the opportunity of valuable experience to those early in their academic careers and the University is keen to maximise the benefit to as many people as possible. The post of Teaching Fellow will involve a significant teaching load, which may extend into the summer period, and there may be related scholarship and the opportunity for administrative duties which relate to education and pedagogy.
The post is for a fixed term only, and it is not anticipated that the post will be extended beyond this fixed term.

The Role: Teaching Fellowship in Music Psychology
We seek to appoint a talented individual to the role of Teaching Fellow in Music Psychology, tenable from 1 September 2026. You will contribute to high-quality teaching and curriculum development at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including the Department’s ongoing efforts to address challenges relating to gender equality, race and decolonisation. You will very likely be required to teach the UG Level 2 module “Music and Science” (Programme and Module Handbook: Undergraduate Programme and Module Handbook 2025-2026 - MUSI2731 Music and Science), contribute seminars about Music Psychology within our newly formulated MA module (“Research in Music”), and provide one-to-one supervision of dissertations at both undergraduate and MA level.

Key Responsibilities

Teach modules in appropriate learning environments at undergraduate/postgraduate levels, demonstrating an increasing awareness of different approaches to and methods of teaching and supporting student learning;

Demonstrate the ability to manage own teaching and designing, planning and writing teaching materials;

Lead some aspects of modules and contribute to modules led by others by collaborating with colleagues on course development;

Develop and deliver an inclusive curriculum and make an active contribution to an inclusive community in which diversity is embraced and celebrated;

Seek and take on board feedback on teaching and engage with others in CPD;

Supervise undergraduate student(s), and where appropriate act as part of a PhD supervisory team;

Contribute to educational skill of colleagues, e.g. giving a seminar to colleagues or engaging in constructive discussion about a seminar;

Build internal contacts and participate in networks to exchange information;

Start to engage in scholarship (the creation, development and maintenance of the intellectual infrastructure of subjects and disciplines) e.g. develop online teaching resources;

In addition to Board of Studies, membership of some departmental committees and professional body memberships;

Student support, assessment of academic performance and provision of feedback, dealing with student disciplinary matters and complaints;

Undertake effectively and efficiently any administrative role allocated by your Head of Department.

Next Steps
Short-listed candidates will be invited to the University, either virtually or in-person and will have the opportunity to meet key members of the Department. The assessment for the post will normally include a presentation to staff and students in the Department followed by an interview and we anticipate that the assessments and interviews will take place over two days in or around Weeks commencing, 20th July 2026.
