Role Purpose
The Lead Engineer (Gas Installs) is a dual-purpose role designed to drive engineering excellence and operational standards. Reporting directly to the Installations Manager, you will spend 20% of your time as a "Productive Specialist," tackling complex installs or escalated technical issues. The remaining 80% is dedicated to technical governance, team leadership, mentoring, and ensuring that our frontline delivery meets the rigorous quality requirements of Phoenix Gas Services.
People Management & Technical Governance (80% Non-Productive)
- Team Leadership: Provide active day-to-day management and oversight of the installations engineering team to ensure productivity and compliance.
- Mentoring: Deliver "on-the-shoulder" mentoring for junior engineers and apprentices, closing skills gaps and ensuring consistent workmanship.
- Quality Assurance: Conduct site inspections and safety spot-checks, ensuring all works are completed in accordance with Gas Safe regulations, H&S protocols, and the "Phoenix Standard."
- Onboarding: Lead practical assessments and technical interviews for new recruits to maintain a high-calibre workforce.
- Communication: Deliver regular Tool Box Talks (TBTs) focused on technical updates, safety, and company procedures.
Advanced Technical Delivery (20% Productive)
- High-Level Installations: Carry out complex domestic gas installations where advanced technical expertise is required.
- Technical "Fixer": Act as the technical point of escalation for difficult installations or site-based queries, supporting a "First Time Fix" culture.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Technical Compliance: Zero major technical non-conformities on audited jobs.
- Team Development: Documented evidence of mentoring sessions and successful onboarding of new starters.
- Operational Excellence: Achievement of installation deadlines and high standards of workmanship across the team.
- Safety Performance: 100% adherence to site H&S requirements and valid documentation for all managed engineers.
Person Specification
Experience & Qualifications
- Essential: Current ACS Gas Qualifications (CCN1, CENWAT, CKR1, HTR1).
- Essential: Time-served experience in a senior or lead installation role.
- Desirable: Knowledge and experience of LPG, Oil, and Unvented systems.
- Desirable: Experience in a supervisory or management capacity within the gas industry.
