Overview
Homeless Action is a large homelessness charity and offers accommodation with support to vulnerable single homeless people. We are looking to appoint a Duty Supervisor on a permanent contract to work nights, weekends and bank holidays at our Sunderland based homeless hostel - Poplar House (26 beds). You will be expected to work an average of 44 hours per week, with overtime available.
We are seeking a proactive Duty Supervisor to provide support and supervision of our vulnerable residents whilst ensuring that the hostel environment is safe and secure. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership qualities, excellent organisational skills, in addition to showing empathy and understanding to our vulnerable residents. The candidate will be expected to lone work with up to 26 vulnerable adults. This role includes night shifts on both weekdays (16.5 hours) and weekends (12.5 hours), in addition to weekend days (12.5 hours).

- An Adult Social Care Level 2 qualification is preferred not essential. The successful candidate will be willing to work towards this qualification.
- Willingness to undertake additional training courses as required.
- First Aid trained is preferred.
- A driving licence and access to own vehicle is desirable.
Duties
- Safeguard the residents by ensuring that the premises are secure and that people within the hostel environment are authorised to be there and behaving in an appropriate manner.
- To conduct and record welfare checks as required.
- Provide support to residents and record this support within the digital support files.
- Observe residents for symptoms of drug or alcohol misuse, liaising with the emergency services if necessary.
- Ensure that any resident issues are clearly recorded in the handover and that any issues are communicated with the Support Officers and the Duty Supervisors.
- Ensure that the hostel environment is clean, tidy and free from any evident defect and that the hostel is handed over in a clean and tidy state.
- Prepare, cook and serve light meals for the residents as instructed by the Hostel Manager.
- Record all accidents accurately in the Accident Book and provide an incident report to the Hostel Manager / Support staff.
- Pass onto the Hostel Manager any complaints made by residents.
- Liaise with the appropriate authorities as and when necessary.
- Collect top-up, gas and electric monies from residents.
- Control Petty cash expenditure.
- Attend a pre shift and post shift handover.
- Provide relief cover for Support Officers and other Duty Supervisors.
- Comply with all of Homeless Actions policies.
- Attend training programmes as and when required.
- Carry out any other duty commensurate with the post, as required.
Skills
- An understanding of professional boundaries.
- A non-judgemental approach to working with homeless people, and an understanding of and commitment to Diversity & Equality.
- An understanding of the needs and support requirements of vulnerable clients on low (or no) incomes, including those with mental health and/or substance dependency problems.
- Basic IT skills - Outlook, SharePoint and Salesforce experience preferred not essential.
- Strong communication skills.
