ROLE OVERVIEW
AMS is seeking an experienced and skilled Workshop Machinist to join our growing team. This is a hands-on role requiring proficiency in both CNC and manual machining, encompassing lathes and milling machines and band saws. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing precision-machined test specimens and components to exact specifications, playing a critical role in supporting our accredited testing services.
The ideal candidate will combine programming capability with practical machining expertise, taking ownership of work from drawing or specification through to finished, quality-checked component. This role offers real variety, from producing standard test pieces for mechanical testing programmes to bespoke, one-off components for specialist investigations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Set up and operate CNC lathes and milling machines, including programming using relevant G-code/conversational programming
- Set up and operate manual lathes and milling machines to produce precision components and test specimens
- Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and work orders to determine machining requirements
- Machine mechanical test specimens to relevant standards (e.g. tensile, Charpy impact, hardness, bend, and ring test samples) with accuracy and repeatability
- Select appropriate tooling, cutting speeds, feeds, and depths of cut to achieve required surface finish and dimensional tolerances
- Band saw operation to produce specimen blanks prior to machining
- Perform in-process and final inspection of machined parts using a range of metrology equipment (micrometers, verniers, height gauges, CMM where applicable)
- Maintain accurate records of machining operations, materials, and non-conformances in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 quality requirements
- Liaise with laboratory technical staff to prioritise workload and meet sample turnaround requirements
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organised workshop environment, adhering to health and safety policies
- Carry out routine machine maintenance and report any faults or concerns promptly
- Support continuous improvement initiatives within the workshop
ESSENTIAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Demonstrable experience operating CNC lathes and milling machines in a production or precision engineering environment
- Proven ability to write and edit CNC programmes (G-code and/or conversational programming such as Fanuc)
- Experience with manual lathe and milling machine operations including turning, facing, boring, threading, and milling
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and geometric tolerances
- Competent use of precision measurement and inspection equipment
- Strong attention to detail with a quality-first mindset
- Ability to work independently and manage own workload effectively
- Good organisational and time management skills with the ability to prioritise and work to tight deadlines
DESIRABLE (not mandatory) SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Experience machining test specimens to standards such as BS EN ISO 6892, ASTM E8, BS EN ISO 148, or similar
- Familiarity with machining a wide range of engineering alloys including carbon steels, stainless steels, nickel alloys, aluminium, titanium, and other aerospace or high-performance materials
- Experience in a materials testing, inspection, or quality laboratory environment
- Knowledge of CAD/CAM software (e.g. Fusion 360, Mastercam, SolidWorks CAM, or similar)
- Multi-axis CNC machining experience (3-axis or above)
- Formal machining qualification (e.g. City & Guilds, NVQ Level 3 in Machining, Apprenticeship in Precision Engineering, or equivalent)
- Awareness of quality management systems such as ISO 9001 or ISO/IEC 17025
