School Caretaker – Job Description
Location: School TQ12
Salary: £27,274 per annum
Hours: 6:30am–2:30pm or 2:00pm–10:00pm (flexibility required to meet operational needs)
Job Purpose
To provide a safe, secure, and well-maintained environment for pupils, staff, and visitors by supporting the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and security of the school premises. The School Caretaker will ensure buildings, grounds, facilities, and equipment are maintained to a high standard, supporting the smooth running of the academy and other schools within the trust as required.
Key ResponsibilitiesSite Maintenance & Facilities
- Carry out routine maintenance tasks, repairs, and checks across school buildings and grounds.
- Identify and report faults, defects, and maintenance issues, arranging repairs where required.
- Ensure classrooms, communal areas, and facilities are safe, clean, and fit for purpose.
- Support contractors and maintenance teams working on site.
- Assist with furniture moves, deliveries, room setups, and general site arrangements.
Health & Safety Compliance
- Complete regular site inspections to identify hazards and ensure compliance with health and safety requirements.
- Support the implementation of school safety procedures and risk assessments.
- Monitor fire safety equipment, emergency exits, and site security arrangements.
- Report incidents, hazards, and maintenance concerns promptly.
- Ensure safe working practices are followed at all times.
Security & Opening/Closing Procedures
- Manage the opening and closing of school premises.
- Maintain site security, including alarms, access control, and safeguarding procedures.
- Respond to emergencies and out-of-hours issues when required.
- Ensure the premises remain secure during and outside school hours.
Cleaning & Grounds Support
- Monitor cleaning standards and liaise with cleaning teams to maintain a high-quality environment.
- Assist with basic grounds maintenance, including external areas and pathways.
- Ensure waste management procedures are followed.
Events & School Support
- Prepare rooms and facilities for meetings, events, examinations, and school activities.
- Support lettings and community use of school facilities where required.
- Provide a responsive and helpful service to staff, pupils, visitors, and contractors.
Person Specification Essential Experience & Skills
- Previous experience in caretaking, facilities management, maintenance, or a similar role.
- Ability to carry out basic repairs and maintenance tasks.
- Good understanding of health and safety procedures.
- Ability to work independently and manage priorities effectively.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Reliable, flexible, and able to respond to changing site requirements.
Desirable
- Experience working within a school or education environment.
- Health & Safety, Fire Safety, or First Aid qualifications.
- Experience managing contractors or compliance checks.
- Full driving licence.
