Full job description

Key Responsibilities

Food Preparation

Assist the cook/chef with basic food preparation such as chopping, peeling, plating, and portion control.
Prepare simple dishes under supervision (e.g., sandwiches, salads, snacks).
Ensure dietary requirements and allergies are followed correctly.

Meal Service

Support the serving of meals to residents, ensuring food is presented attractively and served at the correct temperature.
Assist in setting up dining rooms and clearing away after meals.
Offer friendly, respectful assistance to residents during mealtimes.

Kitchen Hygiene & Safety

Wash dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment to maintain cleanliness at all times.
Clean kitchen surfaces, floors, and storage areas according to hygiene standards.
Follow food safety procedures, including correct storage and labelling of ingredients.
Support safe disposal of kitchen waste and recycling.
Comply with all food hygiene regulations (e.g., HACCP guidelines).

Stock & Supplies

Assist with unpacking deliveries and storing food correctly.
Monitor stock levels and report shortages to the Cook or Manager.
Rotate stock to ensure freshness and reduce waste..

Desirable

Food Hygiene Level 2 certificate
Experience working in a care home, school, or commercial kitchen environment.
Knowledge of special diets (e.g., soft diets, diabetic, low‑salt).

Personal Attributes

Reliable, punctual, and hardworking.
Caring and compassionate towards residents.
Good attention to detail.
Flexible and willing to assist where needed.

Working Conditions

Based in the kitchen and dining areas of the care home.
May involve working mornings, evenings, weekends, or bank holidays.
Requires standing for long periods and handling light to moderate lifting.
