Full job description

This role involves mentoring and safeguarding young people under 18 at risk of exploitation, gang involvement, and criminality, working collaboratively with the CATE team and other agencies. It requires direct community engagement, risk management, and promoting resilience, aligned with St Giles Trust’s values of empowerment and inclusion.

Responsible to:

Responsible for:

Support Children and Young People (CYP) under 18 at risk of or experiencing significant harm, including involvement in criminality, the justice system, gang affiliation, exploitation, and grooming in partnership with the Children’s Services Child Abused Through Exploitation (CATE) Team.

Hours:

Full Time, 35 hours per week

Contract:

Fixed-term until 31/03/2028

Darby House Telford & Wrekin Council Lawn Central Telford TF3 4JA

This role is embedded within the CATE team and requires mentors to maintain a visible, consistent presence within team settings and the community. Home working is not a standard feature of this role due to the need for direct collaboration and timely safeguarding responses.

Holiday:

30 days + bank and statutory holidays (pro-rated if part time)

Salary:

£28,547 per annum

You will form part of a newly established team consisting of two full-time Mentors and a School Mentor embedded within Telford & Wrekin Council’s Children’s Services Child Abused Through Exploitation (CATE) Team. You will work with CYPs under 18 presenting with complex and acute needs within the child exploitation pathway, including those at risk of or experiencing significant harm. This includes supporting CYP affected by criminality, gang involvement, grooming, and contact with the justice system, where their health and life chances are impacted.

(1) Key Deliverables

Deliver intensive one-to-one mentoring and casework support to up to 25 CYPs annually who are affected by criminality, exploitation, gang involvement, or the justice system, improving their safety, wellbeing, and life outcomes.
Building positive relationships with CYP and their families and work directly with them to promote positive change, build resilience, reduce risks, and prevent continued significant harm.
Work collaboratively with the Children’s Services CATE Team, Community Safety, Youth Justice, Police, and other stakeholders to safeguard young people and contribute to a coordinated, whole-system response to exploitation and serious youth violence.
Plan and deliver visible, targeted outreach activities within communities to build trusted relationships with local stakeholders.
Support the development of professional knowledge within the CATE team and wider network on criminal exploitation.
To produce risk management plans based on assessments. To promote inter-agency collaboration in the assessment and planning process, and to include appropriate agencies in the delivery of the service.
Ensuring that confidentiality and security of information is maintained in accordance with our Confidentiality, Data Protection, IT and Security policies. Promoting sustainable working practices and reducing the environmental impact of St Giles work.

Experience

Personal lived experiences similar to those of the target client group.
Proven experience working with CYP affected by criminal exploitation, gang involvement, county lines, grooming, or serious youth violence.
Experience of working within a multi-agency safeguarding environment, collaborating effectively with services such as social care, youth justice, police, education, and community organisations.
Experience of conducting risk assessments and developing intervention/support plans, with a clear understanding of safeguarding frameworks and thresholds.
Experience delivering community-based outreach, including working in non-traditional settings and building relationships with local stakeholders.

Qualifications (Desirable)

Level 3 Advice & Guidance qualification.
Youth Work qualification.

Knowledge

Knowledge of child criminal exploitation, county lines, gang involvement, and grooming.
Knowledge of trauma-informed practice and its application when working with vulnerable or high-risk young people.
Knowledge of and commitment to safeguarding practices and policies, and ability to promote safeguarding among vulnerable clients and colleagues.
Knowledge of youth work principles and needs-led practice, including the ability to apply a cyclical approach: assess need, plan, deliver, and review interventions.
Understanding of risk assessment and risk management processes in relation to exploitation and serious youth violence.
Awareness of and commitment to equal opportunity and diversity practices and policies, and ability to promote diversity and treat colleagues and clients fairly and with respect.

Skills & Abilities

Ability to be a flexible and co-operative member of a team.
Ability to actively listen and motivate young people.
Ability to calculate risk and implement safety procedures when engaging with clients.
Good written, communication skills and ability to use monitoring systems to record all aspects of the project including actions, outcomes, and referrals.
Ability to collaborate with colleagues to achieve organisational goals, and to resolve conflicts of interest professionally.
Awareness of and commitment to equal opportunity and diversity practices and policies, and ability to promote diversity and treat colleagues and clients fairly and with respect.
Strong IT skills including proven experience of using Word, Excel, and Outlook in a similar work environment. Ability to work with case database on a day-to-day basis.
