Role Overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and hands-on Supervisor to support the Store Manager in the day-to-day operation of our independent delicatessen and sandwich & salad store. This is a varied role requiring excellent leadership, strong retail and hospitality experience, and a genuine passion for quality food and exceptional customer service.
This is a hands-on position where every member of the team contributes across all aspects of the business, from serving customers and preparing fresh food to making catering deliveries and supporting both stores whenever required.
The successful candidate will lead by example, motivate the team to maximise every sales opportunity, maintain the highest food safety standards, and ensure both stores consistently deliver an outstanding customer experience.
Working Hours
This role requires flexibility to meet the needs of the business, including weekday, weekend and occasional bank holiday working.
Working every Saturday is an essential requirement of this position and is mandatory. Due to the nature of the business and customer demand, Saturday working is a non-negotiable condition of employment. Applicants must be available to work every Saturday on a regular basis.
Additional hours may be required during busy trading periods, seasonal events and to provide operational support across both stores.
Key Responsibilities
*Leadership & Team Management
* Support the Store Manager in the daily operation of both stores.
* Lead, motivate and develop the team to deliver exceptional customer service.
* Supervise shifts and ensure smooth day-to-day running in the Manager’s absence.
* Encourage a positive, professional and inclusive working environment.
* Identify opportunities to increase sales, average transaction value and customer loyalty.
* Coach team members to maximise commercial opportunities through excellent service and product knowledge.
Customer Service
* Deliver exceptional customer service at both locations.
* Handle customer enquiries, feedback and complaints professionally and efficiently.
* Build strong relationships with regular customers.
* Promote products confidently and provide knowledgeable recommendations.
Food Knowledge & Preparation
* Develop and maintain an excellent knowledge of British cheeses, artisan food products and delicatessen specialities.
* Prepare sandwiches, salads, hot and cold food, and other products to company standards.
* Cook and bake products by accurately following company recipes and specifications.
* Maintain excellent presentation and consistency across all food offerings.
* Minimise waste through careful preparation and stock management.
Stock Management
* Receive and check deliveries for quality and accuracy.
* Maintain effective stock rotation using FIFO principles.
* Monitor stock levels and communicate ordering requirements.
* Reduce waste through excellent date management and stock control.
* Ensure displays remain fully stocked, attractive and commercially presented.
Catering Deliveries
* Deliver catering orders safely, professionally and on time to business and private customers.
* Represent the business positively while making deliveries.
* Assist with loading, transporting and unloading catering orders, ensuring products arrive in excellent condition.
* Travel between both stores and customer locations as required.
* Hold a full, valid UK driving licence and maintain a safe driving record.
Food Safety & Hygiene
* Maintain exceptional standards of cleanliness throughout both stores.
* Complete all daily and weekly cleaning schedules.
* Ensure full compliance with Food Hygiene Regulations and HACCP procedures.
* Monitor food temperatures, storage and labelling.
* Promote safe working practices and maintain a clean, organised working environment.
Operational Responsibilities
* Open and close both stores following company procedures.
* Support cash handling and till reconciliation.
* Ensure both stores remain welcoming, well-stocked and fully operational throughout trading hours.
* Assist with merchandising, seasonal displays and promotional activity.
* Support the Manager in implementing new initiatives and driving business performance.
Essential Skills & Experience
* Previous supervisory experience within hospitality, food retail, cafés, delicatessens or sandwich shops.
* Experience preparing fresh food in a fast-paced environment.
* Strong leadership and team management skills.
* Excellent customer service and communication skills.
* Good stock management and stock rotation experience.
* Sound knowledge of food hygiene and food safety legislation.
* Ability to cook and bake by following recipes accurately.
* Knowledge of British cheeses and artisan food products.
* A full UK driving licence with the ability and willingness to deliver catering orders.
* Ability to work flexibly across both locations.
* Commercial awareness with a proactive approach to increasing sales and profitability.
Desirable Qualifications
* Level 2 Food Safety & Hygiene Certificate (minimum).
* Level 3 Food Safety qualification (desirable).
* Health & Safety training.
* First Aid qualification (desirable).
