We are seeking dedicated Residential Workers who demonstrate integrity, compassion, and a strong commitment to supporting children in a safe and nurturing environment. This role will be based in a new home for up to two children in the Northamptonshire area.
We are looking for candidates with hands-on experience in children’s residential care who are passionate about improving the lives of and outcomes for children and young people.
The Residential Worker will contribute to the effective day-to-day running of the home, providing direct care and support in line with the Children’s Homes Regulations and Quality Standards. They will play a key role in building trusting relationships, promoting independence and wellbeing, and ensuring a safe, supportive, and enriching environment for the children and young people in their care.
Duties & Responsibilities
· Establish and maintain positive, nurturing relationships with children and young people, promoting their emotional wellbeing, independence, and personal strengths. Provide consistent support to help them achieve their goals and build resilience.
· Encourage and support children and young people to develop essential life skills, such as personal care, cooking, budgeting, and healthy decision-making, promoting confidence and self-reliance.
· Work closely with parents, other carers, social workers, education providers, and other professionals to ensure the holistic needs of children are met. Contribute to care reviews, meetings, and multi-agency collaborations.
· Maintain a strong understanding of safeguarding policies and procedures, identifying potential risks and reporting concerns promptly to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all children and young people in your care.
· Support children in their daily routines, such as school preparation, appointments, recreational activities, and bedtime routines. Contribute to the upkeep of the home, including domestic tasks such as cleaning, cooking, and laundry, to maintain a welcoming and safe environment.
· Maintain up-to-date and accurate records, including daily logs, incident reports, and care plans, in line with regulatory and organisational requirements. Ensure confidentiality is respected and data is managed securely.
· Implement positive behaviour support strategies, helping children and young people to understand and manage their emotions and behaviour. Use de-escalation techniques during challenging situations, ensuring responses are proportionate and respectful.
· Conduct regular checks and support risk assessments to ensure the home is safe and secure. Monitor and promote health and hygiene standards, responding swiftly to any identified risks or hazards.
· Provide both emotional and practical support during times of distress or crisis, offering reassurance and advocating for the needs of children and young people to support their recovery and sense of safety.
· Act as a key worker for individual children, building trusted relationships, contributing to the development of personalised care plans, and advocating for their needs, interests, and aspirations.
· Plan and participate in meaningful recreational and social activities, encouraging children and young people to explore their interests, build friendships, and develop positive memories.
· Engage in regular supervision and mandatory training to build knowledge and skills. Maintain a commitment to professional development and continuous learning to deliver high-quality care.
· Promote an environment of respect and inclusivity, ensuring children’s diverse needs are understood, respected, and reflected in daily practices, promoting a sense of belonging and empowerment for all.
Person Specification
Essential
· Previous experience working in a setting relevant to residential children’s care, such as a children’s home, supported accommodation, or similar.
· Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare or equivalent (or a willingness to work towards this within a specified timeframe).
· Understanding of safeguarding policies, procedures, and child protection protocols, with the ability to identify and respond to concerns appropriately.
· Awareness of Ofsted regulations and the Children’s Homes (England) Regulations and Standards.
· Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to build positive relationships and communicate effectively with children, colleagues, and external professionals.
· Ability to remain calm, empathetic, and resilient in challenging situations, using de-escalation techniques where required.
· Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and complete tasks in a timely manner.
· Flexibility to work shifts, including weekends, evenings, and sleep-ins, as required by the needs of the home.
· Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team to ensure the best outcomes for children and young people.
· Commitment to providing high-quality, person-centred care and support, promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion.
· Basic IT literacy and ability to use digital systems for recording and reporting purposes.
Desirable
· Previous experience working with children who have experienced trauma, attachment difficulties, or other complex needs.
· Knowledge of restorative practices and therapeutic care approaches.
· Experience of working within an Ofsted-registered service.
· Understanding of relevant legislation, such as the Children Act 1989, safeguarding legislation, and the Children’s Homes Regulations.
· Ability to plan and facilitate meaningful activities that support children’s personal and social development.
· Ability to drive and hold a current valid driving licence.
