Research Technician
This full-time post is immediately available on a fixed-term basis for 1 year, funded by a 3-year NERC grant.
The starting salary will be from £30,628 on Grade D, depending on knowledge, skills and experience.
We seek a Research Technician to support our research into the ecological impact of vehicle headlights. You would be joining a team of world-leading researchers with expertise in visual ecology. The research aims to determine how vehicle headlights influence the behaviour, ecology and survival of a range of animals. The Research Technician would be responsible for running a series of behavioural experiments and field measurements, insect trapping, together with data processing and curation.
The successful candidate will have experience of working with lepidoptera and other insects (trapping, housing, husbandry, handling); IT skills (video tracking, AI video analysis, AI model training, managing video data); use of digital cameras and microscopes. They must also be able to demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively with teams of researchers and must be motivated by the opportunity to contribute to research.
The post holder will demonstrate an ability to undertake laboratory and field research, including ensuring safe working practices through training and risk assessments, managing inventories of materials and chemicals, and purchasing laboratory supplies.

Research Division
The Research Division is a key enabler to the delivery of the University's Strategy 2030, the Research and Impact Strategy, successful REF performances, and generating external research income, by:
- supporting the full research project lifecycle from inception to impact
- offering research infrastructure support
- providing leadership for the Exeter Doctoral College
- delivering joint strategic, policy and planning support to the University and Faculties
The division consists of four service groups: Doctoral College; Research Services; Research Software and Analytics; and Technical Strategy and Operations.
Technical Strategy and Operations is a centralised team of research and teaching technical staff across the university delivering our institutional technical strategy working in specialist areas, leading on technical infrastructure, equipment and facilities. In addition, the group undertakes and support research and teaching and promoting compliance and best practice, in the labs, studios, workshops, and field.
