About CST Training
CST Training Ltd is a fast-growing UK provider of construction, health & safety and professional-qualifications training, delivering CITB, NEBOSH, IOSH, SMSTS, SSSTS, NVQs, First Aid and related programmes to businesses and individuals across the country, alongside our compliance platform, CST Compliance Control. As we scale, strong cash collection and disciplined credit control are central to funding that growth.
The role
This is a hands-on, operational role that owns credit control end to end. You will take ownership of a live sales ledger of around £1m-2m across 2,000+ accounts — a mix of high-value B2B clients (main contractors, councils, infrastructure and energy firms) and a long tail of smaller individual learners. Your job is to bring that ledger under control: reduce overdue debt, sharpen the collections process, build automated chasing for the long tail, and personally manage the high-value accounts that carry most of the value. You will work closely with Sales, Operations and the awarding-body administration team, and act as the operational link between bookings, invoicing and cash.
Key responsibilities
Credit control & collections
- Own the full credit control cycle — from invoice through to cash collection — across the sales ledger, prioritising by value and age.
- Personally manage and chase the highest-value B2B accounts by phone and email, building relationships with clients’ accounts-payable contacts and resolving queries quickly.
- Design and run a tiered chase process: automated email/SMS reminders for the long tail of smaller balances, and proactive owner-led contact for larger or older debt.
- Operate the late-payment and escalation framework — reminders, final demands, statutory interest, and withholding of certificates/results until payment — in line with CST’s credit terms.
- Allocate incoming payments and clear unallocated credits and overpayments so the ledger reflects true outstanding debt.
- Set, review and manage customer credit limits and payment terms; run credit checks and approve or decline account (terms) applications.
- Manage disputes and queries to resolution, working with Sales and Operations, and escalate to debt recovery or legal where appropriate.
Process, systems & reporting
- Maintain accurate records in the finance system (Xero) and reconcile against the CRM (HubSpot) and direct-debit collections (GoCardless).
- Produce a weekly aged-debtor report and chase worklist, and report on cash collected, DSO and overdue balances to senior leadership.
- Continuously improve the order-to-cash process — tightening how bookings convert to invoices, how terms are agreed and recorded, and how chasing is triggered.
- Help embed CST’s credit terms and order/booking documentation so new account customers are onboarded onto clear, enforceable terms.
Operational & wider finance support
- Support month-end by ensuring receivables are accurate, reconciled and reported on time.
- Provide cash-collection forecasts to support cash-flow planning.
- Identify accounts at risk of non-payment early and flag them to leadership with a recommended course of action.
- Contribute to wider operational and finance-administration tasks as the team scales, and (over time) support or supervise junior finance/admin staff.
What success looks like (first 0–12 months)
- Overdue debt and average days-to-pay (DSO) reduced measurably from current levels.
- A repeatable, largely automated chase process running for the long tail, freeing your time for high-value accounts.
- Aged debt over 3 months brought down and kept low; unallocated credits cleared.
- New account customers consistently onboarded onto signed credit terms before goods are delivered on account.
Skills & experience
Essential
- Proven credit control / accounts-receivable experience managing a sizeable, high-volume ledger end to end.
- A confident, professional telephone manner and a track record of recovering overdue debt while protecting customer relationships.
- Strong working knowledge of a cloud accounting system (Xero or similar) and confident with Excel (filtering, sorting, basic formulas).
- Well organised and self-directed — able to prioritise hundreds of accounts by value and risk and work through them methodically.
- Sound understanding of credit terms, late-payment legislation and the collections/escalation process.
Desirable
- Experience in a training, education, professional-services or B2B environment.
- Familiarity with HubSpot (or another CRM) and direct-debit collection tools such as GoCardless.
- Experience setting up or improving a credit control function or automating dunning.
- AAT, CICM (Chartered Institute of Credit Management) or part-qualified accounting study — or a willingness to work towards it.
Personal attributes
Tenacious and resilient, with the judgement to know when to be firm and when to be flexible. Commercially minded, detail-accurate, and comfortable owning a target. A clear communicator who works well across Sales, Operations and finance, and who takes pride in a clean, well-controlled ledger.
