Stevenage with Hybrid Working
What you’ll be doing
As our Volunteer Manager (known internally as a Local Networks Manager), you’ll lead and develop a portfolio of volunteer-led communities across the UK, EMEA and the Americas, helping to create vibrant, inclusive and engaging networks that deliver real value for members, volunteers and the wider engineering community.
At the heart of this role is volunteer engagement. You’ll work closely with volunteer committees and community leaders, building trusted relationships and creating an environment where volunteers feel supported, empowered and confident to contribute. You'll help communities identify priorities, develop plans, and deliver activities that align with both local needs and the wider objectives of the IET.
This is a role that combines strategic thinking with hands-on delivery. One day you might be supporting volunteers to develop a new community initiative, and the next you could be analysing engagement data, identifying opportunities for growth, or working with colleagues across the IET to improve how we support our networks.
You’ll play an important role in helping communities thrive, bringing people together, sharing best practice, and ensuring volunteers have the tools, guidance, and support they need to succeed. Along the way, you'll help strengthen engagement, build sustainable communities, and demonstrate the impact our networks have across the profession.
Using insight, feedback, and performance data, you'll continually look for ways to improve the volunteer and community experience, helping us evolve and grow our global network of communities for the future.
Please note, this role is a 12 Month Fixed Term Contract, and we will require the successful candidate to have a full UK Driving License as the role will require occasional UK-wide travel (approximately once a quarter with the potential for an overnight stay).
What we hope you can bring to the role
We’re looking for someone who is passionate about working with volunteers and building strong, engaged communities. You’ll have experience supporting volunteer-led, membership, community or network-based activity and understand what it takes to create positive, productive relationships that encourage participation and long-term engagement. You’ll be confident working with a wide range of stakeholders and able to build credibility quickly through collaboration, empathy and excellent communication.
You'll be equally comfortable thinking strategically and delivering operationally. Whether you're helping shape long-term community plans, coordinating activity with volunteers or resolving day-to-day challenges, you'll bring structure, organisation and a focus on achieving positive outcomes.
Strong relationship-building skills will be essential, as will the ability to influence, engage and bring people together around a shared purpose. You'll also be comfortable using data and feedback to understand community performance, identify opportunities and support continuous improvement.
Most importantly, you'll bring a proactive, collaborative and people-focused approach, with a genuine commitment to helping volunteers and communities succeed.
