Clarkwell & Co is a growing firm of Accountants and Tax Advisors based in London. We support limited companies, landlords, sole traders, consultants and individuals across a wide range of industries.
We are seeking an experienced Senior Accountant with strong and recent United Kingdom accountancy practice experience to join our expanding team.
This is not an audit role. The successful candidate must have practical experience preparing accounts, tax returns and compliance work for United Kingdom small and medium-sized businesses and individual clients.
Important Application Requirement
Applicants must have at least 4 years of recent, hands-on experience working in a United Kingdom accountancy practice.
Applications will not be considered from candidates who:
- Do not have United Kingdom accountancy practice experience;
- Have worked mainly in industry rather than practice;
- Have experience limited mainly to audit;
- Have only overseas accounting experience; or
- Do not have practical experience preparing United Kingdom statutory accounts and tax returns.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a portfolio of limited companies, sole traders, landlords and individual clients.
- Prepare and review limited company statutory accounts.
- Prepare Corporation Tax computations and CT600 returns.
- Prepare and review Self Assessment tax returns for directors, landlords, sole traders and other individuals.
- Review bookkeeping records, VAT returns and management accounts.
- Identify tax planning opportunities and provide practical advice to clients.
- Deal confidently with client queries by telephone, email and in meetings.
- Monitor Companies House, Corporation Tax, VAT and Self Assessment deadlines.
- Review work prepared by junior accountants and bookkeepers.
- Support and train junior members of the team.
- Assist with company formations, confirmation statements and company secretarial matters.
- Assist with VAT, PAYE, Corporation Tax and other HMRC registrations.
- Ensure client work is completed accurately, professionally and on time.
- Support the directors with client onboarding, workflow management and practice development.
- Maintain strong client relationships and a high standard of client service.
Essential Requirements
- At least four years of recent United Kingdom accountancy practice experience.
- Strong practical experience preparing statutory accounts, Corporation Tax returns and Self Assessment tax returns.
- Good knowledge of VAT, bookkeeping, Companies House compliance and HMRC procedures.
- Experience managing a portfolio of United Kingdom clients.
- Experience reviewing work and supporting junior team members.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Confidence dealing directly with clients.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
- Ability to work independently, use initiative and take ownership of client work.
- ACCA, ACA, ATT or another relevant qualification, or strong qualification-by-experience.
Software Experience
Practical experience with the following software would be highly beneficial:
- QuickBooks Online;
- Xero;
- BrightManager;
- BrightPay;
- TaxCalc; and
- Microsoft Excel.
Candidates should be confident learning and using accountancy practice systems and maintaining accurate digital client records.
