We won't lie - we're kind of a big deal around here.
Barleylands Farm Shop has been serving the people of Billericay and Essex for 25 years. We're a community destination - fresh produce, discount grocery, an in-house kitchen, wholesale operation, live-selling shows, and a team that genuinely loves what they do.
We've got a cracking product range that flies out the door, a loyal customer base built over two and a half decades, a brilliant team who take real pride in the shop, and big ambitions for the next chapter of the business.
And now we need you.
Why Barleylands is a great place to work
- Genuine responsibility from day one - this isn't a babysitting role
- £41,600 per year - 40 hours per week
- No two days are the same - fresh produce, grocery, wholesale, kitchen, events
- A tight-knit team who actually enjoy coming to work
- 25 years of community trust behind you - the brand opens doors
- Real scope to grow with the business and take on more
- Free parking, easy access, Billericay location
So what's the job actually about?
We're looking for a Store Manager who will be the number one in day-to-day operations - the person who runs the show on the ground so the business can keep moving forward.
You'll be responsible for:
- Leading, motivating and managing the team across all shifts
- Opening and closing the store - you're the person who sets the standard
- Managing the shop floor so it looks outstanding every single day
- Overseeing stock, ordering and supplier relationships
- Driving sales and making sure the store hits its targets
- Dealing with customer queries, escalations and keeping standards high
- Running the whole operation when required
What your typical day will look like:
6:00am - You roll in before the team. First walk of the shop floor - check the overnight stock replenishment is done, note anything that needs attention.
6:20am - Quick briefing with the early team. Set the tone. Today's priorities are clear.
7:00am - Produce delivery arrives. You oversee the unload and check quality - standards matter here.
8:00am - Store opens. You're on the floor, not hiding in an office. Team's in position, display looks great.
9:30am - Catch-up with your supervisor on the day's tasks. Check in with the kitchen team on the sandwich run.
10:30am - Walk the shop with a critical eye - gaps filled? Tickets right? Fridge temps checked?
12:00pm - Lunch break. You actually take it.
1:00pm - Back on the floor. Busy lunchtime trade to manage.
2:30pm - Review the day's sales figures. Spot a line that's flying - flag to the buyer to reorder.
3:30pm - Shift handover to your afternoon supervisor. Walk them through the day and what needs finishing.
5:00pm - Admin time - rotas, messages, anything that needs escalating.
6:00pm - Done. The store is in safe hands.
Every day is different. But it's always busy and always rewarding.
The ideal candidate:
- Previous retail management experience - supermarket, farm shop, grocery or similar
- Has managed a team of 5 or more people and is comfortable having difficult conversations
- A natural leader - people follow you because they respect you
- Commercially minded - you understand margins, wastage and what makes a store profitable
- Sets high standards and holds the team to them
- Reliable - if you say 6am, you're there at 5:55
- Genuinely loves retail and the buzz of a busy shop floor
- Calm under pressure and decisive when it matters
This role is NOT for you if:
- You've never managed a team before
- You prefer the office to the shop floor
- You're not available to work weekends - this is non-negotiable
- You struggle when things change quickly
- You're looking for a quiet life
