Learning Together is a small, specialised care and supported living provider for autistic adults with complex challenges of learning, communication and behaviour. Traditionally in our field, autism has been pathologised with people often defined only in terms of their behaviour and/or perceived deficits/lack of skills. Summary:

We are seeking a Positive Approaches Lead Practitioner to join our team. This new role is largely a hands-on one with administration and paperwork kept to a minimum. The ideal candidate may have a background in behaviour support and experience of providing direct support to non or partially speaking autistic people. They will have excellent clinical skills. Most importantly, they must enjoy working closely with people, be curious in nature and have an obvious passion for the work.

Initially on a one-year fixed term contract but, subject to negotiation after six months, the role could become permanent.

Responsibilities:

Spending time with the people we support in their homes – various slots/times during the person’s day and week. Normal working hours will be between 9am - 5pm Monday - Friday but the role will require some flexibility in how and when these hours are worked. As the post holder will be working alongside people and their Support Workers as part of their everyday activities, occasional evening and weekend work may be required

Using Video Reflective Practice: making and watching videos for the purposes of self-reflection and advocating for the persons supported (VRP Training provided).

Providing guidance, support, coaching and training to families and caregivers.

Monitoring and evaluating people’s progress regularly, adjusting things as needed to optimise outcomes and ensure ongoing engagement and motivation from everyone involved.

Participate in team meetings, case meetings, and professional development activities to share knowledge, expertise, and best practices with colleagues and contribute to the continuous improvement of services. Stay informed about current research, trends, and advancements in the field of speech and language therapy through ongoing learning and professional development opportunities.

Qualifications & Requirements for the role:

A related university degree and/or equivalent experience coupled with a Positive Behaviour Support qualification.

A thorough understanding of the Positive Behaviour Support framework. Knowledge and experience in assessing and supporting non-speaking/partially-speaking autistic people.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport, establish trust, and communicate effectively with those supported, their families, and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.

Strong problem-solving abilities, critical thinking skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Commitment to upholding the highest standards of professional practice, ethics, and confidentiality, and to ongoing learning and development.

A valid drivers’ licence for at least past 2 years

An open-minded attitude and ability to listen to advice and learn from experience.

Must be fit and able to carry out the duties of the position.

Advantageous:

Previous care work experience
Health & Social Care Diploma level 3 or 4 OR equivalent in Health & Social Care
Knowledge and experience of using Augmented and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems
