We are looking to recruit two enthusiastic specialty doctors initially on a 12month fixed term contract with the possibility of the posts becoming substantive. The post holders will be responsible for delivering general internal medicine expertise on the oncology ward, and support the delivery of the acute oncology service across the trust through leading the development on an oncology day case emergency service (ODEC).
Candidates are not expected to have received specialist training in oncology but should demonstrate enthusiasm to deliver new ways of working to improve the quality of care offered to patients receiving cancer care at Torbay.
The post-holder will work closely with the wider oncology team, comprising of consultant oncologists, specialist registrars, speciality doctors and the existing nurse led acute oncology service. We encourage post holders to take an active role in research and development and to participate in the teaching programs of the department.
The successful applicant will join our Consultants based at Torbay Hospital; Dr Louise Medley, Dr Nicole Dorey, Dr Jonathan Chambers, Dr Naomi Cole, Dr Geoff Cogill, Dr Claire Dyke, Dr Victoria Cope, Dr Andy Goodman, Dr Anna Lydon, Dr Nangi Lo, Dr Tim Norris, Dr Kelly Rust and Dr Helen Saxby.
The post holder will work primarily in the in-patient setting however there will be opportunities for developing an interest in the Non-Site Specific/Malignancy of Unknown Origin clinics. The main duties of the post will be to:
Work with the senior management team to develop, implement, and evaluate new pathways of same day care for patients on active cancer treatments
Provide general medicine expertise on the oncology ward
Support shared decision making, advance care planning and discharge planning for in-patients on the oncology ward
Provide education and training on issues related to general medicine, multimorbidity and geriatric syndromes for the wider multidisciplinary cancer teams
Nationally, there is increasing focus on Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC). In many acute hospitals there are now dedicated oncology SDEC models which can potentially avoid unnecessary overnight admission with early input from acute oncology team. This new post is dedicated to developing this service for the local population of Torbay. Referrals are anticipated to be primarily from the dedicated telephone triage service supporting known patients having active treatment but will also aim to stream patients from ED and AMU.

We employ approximately 6,000 staff including frontline health and social care staff, such as nurses, occupational therapists, social workers, consultants, and physiotherapists who work in your home and from a range of different premises across Torbay and South Devon such as community hospitals and clinics.
