Join AP Education and Make a Difference
AP Education is seeking compassionate, child-centred Alternative Provision Tutors to support learners across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) from September.
We work with children and young people who require personalised educational support outside of mainstream settings. Many of our learners have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, anxiety, school avoidance, or other barriers to education. Our tutors play a vital role in helping students re-engage with learning, build confidence, and achieve positive outcomes.
The Role
We are looking for tutors who can deliver core subjects across Key Stages 1–4, adapting their teaching approach to meet the individual needs of each learner.
Each student typically receives 10–15 hours of tuition per week, and tutors often support multiple learners, building timetables of 10–30 hours per week depending on availability, location, and referrals.
Sessions generally take place between 9:00am and 4:00pm, either in the learner's home, community venues, or other agreed educational settings.
Responsibilities
- Deliver engaging, personalised tuition in English, Maths and other core subjects where appropriate.
- Build positive, trusting relationships with learners and families.
- Adapt teaching strategies to meet a wide range of SEND and SEMH needs.
- Monitor progress and provide concise session feedback.
- Promote confidence, resilience, and positive engagement with learning.
- Work collaboratively with AP Education and other professionals involved in the learner's support.
Essential Requirements
- Minimum 2 years' experience working with children or young people with SEND.
- Minimum 2 years' experience teaching within the English National Curriculum.
- Experience working with children and young people with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
- Ability to deliver core subjects across one or more key stages from KS1–KS4.
- A genuinely child-centred approach to education.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one).
- Right to work in the UK.
- Access to transport and willingness to travel within the BCP area.
Desirable Requirements
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
- Experience within alternative provision, specialist education, tutoring, or intervention programmes.
- Experience delivering Functional Skills, GCSE, or primary curriculum tuition.
- Understanding of trauma-informed practice and relational approaches to education.
