Quantity Surveyor / Estimator
An excellent opportunity for an experienced Quantity Surveyor / Estimator looking to join an award-winning, multi-disciplinary, family-owned construction company.
You will be an integral part of our commercial team, working closely with the Commercial Manager, Directors and Project Managers across a varied portfolio of construction projects.
This is a hands-on role combining estimating with day-to-day Quantity Surveying and commercial management. You will be involved from initial enquiry and tender through to project completion, helping to ensure projects are accurately priced, commercially controlled and delivered at sustainable margins.
What you will be doing
- Preparing estimates, quotations and tender submissions.
- Reviewing drawings, specifications and tender information to identify scope, cost requirements and commercial risks.
- Measuring and valuing works.
- Monitoring project costs, forecasts and margins throughout delivery.
- Preparing and managing applications, valuations, variations and final accounts.
- Undertaking cost/value analysis and highlighting potential overspends, savings or margin pressures.
- Managing the commercial aspects of subcontractors and suppliers.
- Obtaining and analysing supplier and subcontractor quotations.
- Supporting procurement and identifying value engineering opportunities.
- Maintaining clear and accurate commercial and contractual records.
- Supporting the administration of NEC4 contracts, including early warnings, compensation events, notices and associated commercial records.
- Visiting sites as required to understand progress, verify quantities and identify any commercial implications arising from changes, delays or site conditions.
- Working closely with project teams to ensure what was priced at tender stage remains connected to what is being delivered on site.
Ideally, you will have
- Practical experience within Quantity Surveying, estimating or a commercial construction role.
- Experience within civil engineering, residential or general construction.
- Practical experience working with NEC4 contracts and a good understanding of NEC4 contract administration.
- A relevant qualification such as an HNC, HND or Degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- A good understanding of construction methods, materials, project costs and subcontractor packages.
- Experience of valuations, variations, project budgets, forecasting and commercial reporting.
- The ability to interpret drawings, specifications and tender information.
- Strong numerical and commercial awareness.
- The ability to identify priorities, manage your own workload and work to tight deadlines.
- Confidence communicating with clients, subcontractors, suppliers and colleagues at all levels.
- Experience using Microsoft Excel and Word, with estimating or commercial software experience advantageous.
- Experience across civil engineering, residential, timber frame or SIPS projects would be particularly advantageous.
We are also open to speaking with an experienced Assistant Quantity Surveyor who is ready to take the next step, or an Estimator with practical QS experience who is looking to broaden their role, provided they have relevant NEC4 contract experience.
In return we offer
- £40,000 to £48,000 per annum, depending on experience.
- Company car or car allowance.
- 20 days holiday plus 8 bank holidays, increasing with service.
- Company contributory pension scheme.
- Support with personal and professional development.
- A varied role with the opportunity to work across projects from tender through to completion.
- A safe and supportive place to work.
If you are commercially minded, enjoy getting into the detail of how projects are priced and delivered, have practical NEC4 experience and like the idea of working across both estimating and live project commercial activity, we would be keen to hear from you.
Please apply with your CV or send it to [email protected] to be considered for the role.
