About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Highways Steward to join our Network Management team in East Sussex.

In this role, you’ll take ownership of a defined geographic area, acting as a key point of contact for local councillors, parish representatives and residents. You’ll play a vital role in maintaining the safety and performance of the highway network through inspections, investigations and stakeholder engagement.

What you'll be doing

Carry out routine and reactive highway safety inspections, identifying defects and raising works orders
Undertake detailed inspections and determine appropriate remedial actions
Manage and respond to customer enquiries in line with policies and service standards
Investigate third-party claims relating to personal injury or property damage, ensuring robust documentation
Attend meetings with local councillors, residents and stakeholders, representing the business professionally
Support delivery across the wider Network Management service
Contribute to minimising third-party claims and supporting recovery processes
Help deliver contractual performance targets and service standards
Champion Health & Safety and Zero Harm across all activities

Who we're looking for

Experience in highways inspections, maintenance or operations
A working knowledge of highways maintenance standards and policies
Strong communication and customer service skills
Experience managing customer expectations in a professional manner
Confidence engaging with elected members and stakeholders
Good IT skills, including experience using works management systems
Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage a varied workload
The ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Full UK driving licence
Ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines
Flexible and adaptable approach to work
