SMF 16 — Compliance Oversight Function (Part-Time)

About us

Consumer Genius Limited is the UK subsidiary of Consumer Genius Inc., a leading North American performance marketing and lead generation company. We operate a growing legal claims and financial marketing business in the UK, regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). We are seeking an experienced compliance professional to hold the SMF 16 (Compliance Oversight) designation on a part-time, permanent employment basis — ideal for a senior compliance practitioner seeking a flexible, reduced-hours role while staying active in a regulated environment.

About the role

As SMF 16 holder you will be the FCA's designated point of accountability for compliance oversight at Consumer Genius Limited. The business is lean and operationally mature, meaning day-to-day compliance demands are manageable within a part-time commitment — with the expectation that availability increases during regulatory events, FCA interactions, or product launches.

This is a permanent, part-time employed position of approximately 1–2 days per week (15 hours), with flexibility on how those hours are scheduled. You will report directly to the UK Managing Director and work closely with the group's senior leadership and external legal advisors.

Key responsibilities

Hold the SMF 16 designation and act as the primary FCA accountability holder for compliance oversight.
Own and maintain the firm's compliance monitoring programme, policies, and procedures.
Prepare and submit regulatory reports including GABRIEL/RegData returns, REP-CRIM, and ad hoc FCA correspondence.
Identify, assess, and escalate regulatory risks; maintain the firm's risk register.
Oversee the SM&CR framework including Certification Regime assessments and Conduct Rules training.
Review marketing materials, lead generation campaigns, and customer journeys for compliance with FCA COBS, CONC, and Consumer Duty obligations.
Monitor FCA, ICO, ASA, and Claims Management regulatory developments and assess business impact.
Liaise with external legal counsel on regulatory matters, complaints, and FCA supervisory engagement.
Deliver a quarterly compliance report to the Board and an annual compliance review.

Essential requirements

FCA-approved (or approvable) for SMF 16 or a comparable Senior Manager Function.
5+ years in UK financial services compliance, regulatory consulting, or legal claims management.
Strong working knowledge of the FCA Handbook (COBS, CONC, SYSC, Consumer Duty).
Comfortable operating as a standalone compliance function within a lean business.
Able to manage a variable workload — steady-state part-time hours with surge availability when required.
Excellent written communication for regulatory submissions and board reporting.
Right to work in the UK.

Nice to have

Experience in legal claims marketing or CMC regulation.
Background in lead generation or performance marketing compliance.
ICO/GDPR compliance experience.
ICA, CISI, or equivalent compliance qualification.
Experience working within a parent company or group operating across multiple jurisdictions.

Important notice — FCA approval

This role requires FCA approval under the Senior Managers & Certification Regime. The successful candidate must either hold existing FCA approval or be suitable for approval as assessed by the firm and the FCA. Employment is conditional on FCA approval being granted. All candidates are subject to regulatory reference checks and criminal record screening in line with FCA requirements.

Pay: £24,420.00-£59,995.13 per year
