An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Geriatrician to join a dynamic and forward-thinking Older People's Service in Scotland.

The successful candidate will contribute to a comprehensive geriatric medicine service, delivering high-quality care for older patients across acute, rehabilitation, and community settings. The role offers strong involvement in innovative care models, including frailty services and hospital-at-home pathways, as well as opportunities in teaching, research, and service development.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Provide, alongside consultant colleagues, a comprehensive Geriatric Medicine service, including management of frailty, stroke, and complex elderly care.
Deliver specialist input into acute care pathways, including frailty assessment and Acute Care of the Elderly services.
Support and further develop frailty services, including the Acute Frailty Unit and front-door assessment models.
Contribute to the Hospital at Home service, including multidisciplinary care, home visits, and admission avoidance pathways.
Participate in inpatient care, including ward rounds, multidisciplinary assessment, and rehabilitation planning.
Provide input into day hospital services, including multidisciplinary assessment and outpatient rehabilitation.
Support community-facing services, including assessment and rehabilitation pathways and supported discharge models.
Participate in the consultant on-call rota (approximately 1:6).
Supervise and support junior medical staff and multidisciplinary teams.
Contribute to teaching, postgraduate education, and training programmes.
Participate in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, and research activities.
Contribute to service development, including innovative care models and integrated health and social care pathways.
Provide cross-cover for consultant colleagues during periods of leave.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Registration

Essential

Medical degree (MBChB or equivalent).
MRCP (UK) or equivalent qualification.
Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise.
Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Geriatric Medicine (or within 6 months of CCT/CESR).

Desirable

Higher degree or additional postgraduate qualifications.
ALS certification or equivalent.

Experience

Essential

Extensive and recent experience in Geriatric Medicine, including frailty and complex elderly care.
Experience in acute and general medicine, including managing unselected admissions.
Experience working in high-volume, fast-paced clinical environments.
Experience supervising junior doctors and multidisciplinary teams.
Experience in clinical governance, audit, and service delivery within the NHS.
Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.

Desirable

Subspecialty interest (e.g., stroke, orthogeriatrics, movement disorders, community geriatrics).
Experience in service development or redesign.
Experience in research or clinical trials.

Skills & Competencies

Essential

Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills in geriatric medicine.
Ability to manage complex, multi-morbid patients.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
Strong organisational and time management skills.
Understanding of NHS systems, clinical governance, and patient safety frameworks.

Teaching, Audit & Research

Essential

Evidence of involvement in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
Participation in clinical audit and quality improvement activities.
Ability to critically appraise medical literature.

Desirable

Research experience, publications, or presentations.
Experience designing or leading audit/research projects.
