Job description

The Local Passenger Transport & Inclusion Directorate sits at the heart of the Department for Transport, improving journeys by putting people first and removing barriers to access. This Grade 6 role offers the opportunity to shape policy and deliver impactful change across local transport. You will provide strategic leadership, engage with Ministers and senior leaders, and work collaboratively in a flexible, high-performing, matrix environment to drive government priorities and improve vital transport services across communities.

Your responsibilities will include, but arent limited to:

Provide strategic oversight of and direction for delivery of the Groups (PTLG) response to the Middle East crisis and the effect that this has on the sectors we represent
Work with analysts, lawyers, and stakeholders to understand potential implications of policy choices for local transport and inclusion in any planned policy responses to support the sector due to the conflict in the Middle East. Work through and set out the policy options and implications of choices and advise ministers on the way forward.
Take responsibility for ensuring the team has the right delivery plans/project/programme governance structures in place to deliver effectively on ministerial ambition for the implementation of the Bus Services Act.
At the appropriate juncture, work with taxis and accessibility team to prepare for implementation of a Taxis Bill into Parliament
Deputise for the deputy director(s) as required and make an active contribution to the wider LPTI leadership team.
Make an active corporate contribution to the wider department and to corporate well-being across the LPT&I
Proactively build relationships with stakeholders in the sector to build consensus for the policy agenda and the delivery plans
Role model excellent relationships and work with colleagues across government to deliver ministerial objectives for local transport and inclusion

To be successful in this role you will need to have the following experience:

Leading on a range of complex policy areas and delivery challenges where political, commercial and regulatory factors often combine.
Working confidently and effectively to forge strong relationships across team and professional boundaries to make things happen.

Additional Information

Working hours, office attendance and travel requirements

Full time roles consist of 37 hours per week.

Whilst we welcome applications from those looking to work with us on a part time basis, there is a business requirement for the successful candidate to be able to work at least 30 hours per week.

This role is suitable for hybrid working, which is a non-contractual arrangement where a combination of workplace and home-based working can be accommodated subject to business requirements.

The expectation at present is a minimum of 60% of your working time a month will be spent at either your designated workplace (one of the locations cited in the advert) or, when required for business reasons, in another office/work location/visiting stakeholders. Your designated workplace will be your contractual place of work. There may be occasions where you are required to attend above the minimum expectation.

Occasional travel to other offices will be required, which may involve overnight stays.
