Lincoln Zoo is looking for a practical, reliable and hardworking Gardens Assistant to help maintain our gardens, grounds, tropical houses and visitor areas across our 10-acre site.
This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys working outdoors, takes pride in keeping public spaces clean, safe and well presented, and is confident engaging with visitors in a busy attraction environment.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Maintaining gardens and grounds across the zoo site
- Helping care for and maintain two large tropical houses
- Strimming and edging paths, fences and borders
- Weed control and general garden maintenance
- Planting seeds, flowers and plants, including propagation and cuttings
- Watering planted areas and tropical house displays
- Weeding flower beds, pathways and outdoor spaces
- Keeping outdoor areas clean, tidy and presentable
- Assisting with general grounds maintenance and minor repairs where required
- Supporting preparation of zoo grounds for events, school visits and busy visitor periods
- Ensuring tools and equipment are used safely and maintained appropriately
- Carrying out manual handling and lifting tasks safely as required
Skills & Experience Required
The ideal candidate will have:
- Previous experience in gardening, groundskeeping, horticulture or outdoor maintenance
- Confidence and knowledge in using gardening tools and equipment, including mowers, strimmers and sprayers
- A practical, hands-on approach with good attention to detail
- The ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Reliability, flexibility and good timekeeping
- A willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- An interest in plants, groundskeeping, horticulture or tropical planting
- Awareness of health and safety when using tools, equipment and chemicals
- Relevant certification or qualifications would be beneficial depending on duties undertaken, but are not essential
Pay: £12.71-£15.00 per hour
