An excellent opportunity has arisen for Consultant Histopathologists to join a large and progressive Cellular Pathology service in Wales. These opportunities are available for both locum and substantive candidates, joining an established team of 13 consultants delivering a broad histopathology and cytopathology service across a major regional pathology network. The department supports primary and secondary care services as well as regional and tertiary referral work, with a strong reputation for subspecialist diagnostics, collaborative MDT working, and innovation in pathology services.

This is an exciting opportunity to work within a modern, academically engaged pathology service that is actively developing for the genomic and precision medicine era. The successful appointee will undertake diagnostic surgical pathology and cytology, with participation in autopsies optional, and will be encouraged to develop a specialist interest alongside teaching, audit, and research activities. The department also offers a flexible approach to working practices, including homeworking, supported by digital pathology infrastructure and strong university links.

Main Responsibilities

Provide a comprehensive Cellular Pathology / Histopathology service to clinical colleagues, GPs, dentists and other medical staff across the service.
Undertake diagnostic surgical pathology and cytology as part of the consultant histopathology team.
Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings for the diagnosis and therapeutic assessment of cancer patients.
Contribute to the weekly on-call rota (currently 1 in 12) with prospective cover.
Work collaboratively with consultant colleagues and the wider multi-professional team to deliver safe, effective and efficient pathology services.
Participate in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, risk management and service development activities.
Support undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, training and educational activity across the department.
Contribute to research and academic development where appropriate, including specialist interests aligned with departmental and regional needs.
Maintain appraisal, revalidation and continuing professional development requirements in line with GMC and Royal College standards.
Take part in Health Board statutory and mandatory training and contribute to departmental planning and modernisation.

About the Service

The Cellular Pathology service forms part of a large pathology directorate and provides histopathology and cytopathology services across a wide catchment population, with significant regional and tertiary referral activity. The department supports a high-volume workload and provides specialist services in areas including haematopathology, soft tissue, renal, cardio-thoracic, gastrointestinal, breast, endocrine, gynaecological, head & neck and urology pathology. The service is UKAS-accredited, digitally enabled, and supported by advanced IT systems, digital slide scanners, and voice-recognition reporting tools, thereby facilitating flexible working and collaborative practice.

The successful appointee will join a department strongly linked to teaching, research, and translational innovation, with opportunities to help shape future service delivery within a modern pathology model. The standard consultant job plan is 10 sessions, with a provisional structure of 7 DCCs and 3 SPAs, alongside participation in the on-call rota.

Requirements

Essential

Full and specialist GMC registration with a licence to practise, or eligibility within six months of interview
CCT or within six months of award by interview date, or evidence of equivalence to UK CCT for non-UK trained applicants
FRCPath or evidence of an equivalent qualification
Evidence of the ability to develop effective working relationships across multidisciplinary teams
Evidence of working with management and clinical colleagues to improve services
Evidence of teaching and training undergraduate and/or postgraduate clinical staff
Evidence of initiating, progressing and completing the audit
Effective leadership skills and the ability to take responsibility when appropriate
Strong teamworking, communication and interpersonal skills
Understanding of information systems and technology relevant to pathology practice
Flexible and adaptable approach with the ability to work under pressure
Ability to undertake the on-call commitment
Commitment to continuous improvement, clinical development and high-quality patient care
