Purpose of the job:
SSOs are part of a team working across Cardiff Sixth Form College to ensure that all students have access to a safe and secure environment. This is an important, front-line role, working directly with students to ensure we comply with all legal requirements relating to minimum standards of care, safeguarding and health & safety.
Main Responsibilities
- Supervise and patrol Cardiff Sixth Form College designated teaching & accommodation block, supporting students as required, ensuring study & communal areas are safe, homely and orderly;
- Monitor college CCTV feeds, acting on any concern;
- Monitor entrance and departure of students from the site;
- Monitor entrance and departure of all other authorised persons to the site;
- Prevent entry of any unauthorised personnel;
- Manage visitors to the site; escort them or arrange an escort if required;
- Guard against theft and maintain security of the designated site;
- Report any irregularities as per college policy;
- Ensure that information of incidents, safeguarding concerns, health & safety and maintenance issues are recorded and reported;
- Fulfil fire evacuation responsibilities, in line with CFSC fire evacuation procedures;
- Be proactive in the event of an emergency situation, in line with CSFC critical incident plan;
- Assist the House Parents and Housekeeping team, as required and as directed by line manager;
- Follow policy on receiving, holding and dispensing students' post/parcels;
- Uphold the student behaviour policy;
- Ensure only students permitted to enter certain areas have access;
- Play a key role in the preparation of rooms for student use at the beginning of the academic year and for the beginning of Summer and Pre-Sessional courses;
- Clear rooms after CSFC students leave for the end of term, disposing of waste and moving and storing luggage safely and appropriately;
- Administer first aid (following training) where necessary and liaise with boarding staff and/or emergency services.
Other Tasks:
- The role may require some heavy lifting and the use of software programmes for reporting, so it is vital to ensure that all training is up to date;
- Carry out laundry and cleaning duties as required;
- Give tours of accommodation to visitors of the college when required and directed by line manager;
- Undertake such duties as may reasonably be required in consideration of your role, general responsibilities, grade/salary level;
- Assist with room and kitchen inspections in boarding accommodation; as and when required.
- Undertake any reasonable task as required in the support of student services within the school.
Health & Safety
- Comply with all health and safety procedures as required by the college on all sites, particularly to ensure all fire evacuation requirements are met and any training required is completed to ensure an understanding of all fire software, alarm panels and equipment.
- Report any H&S concerns, issues and near misses.
- Monitor and maintain good housekeeping.
Safeguarding Responsibilities
- Cardiff Sixth Form College is committed to its responsibility for safeguarding and promoting the welfare or its students in line with government recommendations and policies. Due to this, all staff at the college have a responsibility for safeguarding and reporting any concerns regarding students to the DSP or a Deputy Safeguarding Officer. Your safeguarding responsibilities mean that you will need to:
- Demonstrate a commitment to promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons in line with College Policy and procedure.
- Respond and deal with incidents in a sensitive, empathetic and supportive manner, reporting any incidents to the accommodation manager and pastoral team.
- Undertake initial and regular safeguarding training and be willing to undertake additional safeguarding training to enhance professional development.
Person Specification
- Be able to manage the physical demands of a role which requires some lifting and long periods standing/walking;
- Be adaptable and show good judgement;
- Have good organisational skills and an ability to complete tasks without supervision whilst also functioning as a part of a team;
- Work effectively with other people by being self-aware, treating people equally and sensitively, whilst ensuring all aspects of confidentiality are maintained;
- Develop good working relationships with colleagues;
- Communicate clearly by getting the message across effectively, listening carefully and responding to feedback;
- Represent CSFC professionally and adhere to the highest levels of customer service with all stakeholders including students, parents, agents, guardians and external service providers.

Terms & Conditions:
Remuneration: £12.71 p/h
Working Hours: 40.5 hours per 4 shifts, Day Shift: 07.30 – 19.30 or Evening Shift: 19.30 – 07.30
Rota: 4 days on and 4 days off, on an 8-day rolling working pattern
Flexibility to cover day or night shift on request
Holiday entitlement: 38 days (25 shifts)
Notice period: 4 weeks
Probationary period: 6 months
