Due to continued growth of the charity we need to recruit a Children and Young People’s Suicide Bereavement Support Practitioner who, working alongside a colleague in Westmorland and Furness, can deliver flexible support to children and young people in Cumberland who are bereaved and impacted by suicide, including the Carlisle, Copeland and Allerdale areas.

This is an incredibly rewarding but also emotionally demanding role, and we are looking for a highly resilient individual who can support children and young people after experiencing what is generally regarded as one of the most traumatic forms of bereavement. We are looking for someone who is passionate about our cause, can work flexibly and creatively, is an excellent communicator with children, and who can go the extra mile for our young clients.

The service will sit within our broader range of support for suicide bereaved people and communities in Cumbria. Working with 4-21 year olds, it will offer highly flexible support – and target both the child directly and the system around that child, particularly in the family and school environment. Interventions will include;

One-to-one talking, practical or play therapy-based support delivered at home, school or online.
Group support following a peer suicide at school or other community setting.
Enabling parents to more effectively support the child’s grieving, inform the child about the nature of the death, and to understand the impact of the death on children.
Supporting, training and advising schools staff or other frontline workers to provide a supportive environment for the suicide bereaved young person.
Provision of physical and digital information and resources to young people, schools and families that support grieving.

Support would be focused, but not limited to, the first six months after the bereavement, but we would expect to have longer term informal contact with young people, checking in at significant anniversaries, and ensuring they know that support is still available later down the line. Suicide bereavement it is often several years of bumpy grieving.

Newly suicide bereaved families are automatically referred to our service through Cumbria Police, usually within the week following a suspected suicide. Additional referrals will come direct from parents, schools and other services. The Postholder would work alongside another Children and Young People’s Practitioner based in Westmorland and Furness, and two other adult Suicide Bereavement Support Practitioners, and the broader Every Life Matters staff team.

The Postholder may also be required to co-deliver or deliver training and/or briefing sessions for schools and other providers on understanding suicide bereavement and children (though full support will be given to prepare the postholder for this).

This post would suit an individual who has experience of supporting children and young people who have experienced trauma and/or loss, in both emotional and practical terms. The service will cover primary and secondary aged children so an excellent range of communication skills is essential. We also realise this is a fairly specialist area of support and are willing to consider candidates who have solid transferable skills.

Though based around core working hours, the postholder would be required to work some evenings and weekend as required by the role, and to attend fundraising or other events related to the post, to represent the charity. A willingness to be flexible with working hours is essential.

The postholder would receive full induction, mentoring and training to enable them to carry out the role effectively. We also offer a comprehensive package of supervision and continuing professional development, and believe in the importance of investing in developing the skills, expertise and capabilities of our staff team.

This post is 4 days per week (with option to extend to 5 days)**
