Analytical Development Scientist

We are looking for an innovative and conscientious Analytical Development Scientist to take a key role in developing new products, focusing on the chemical aspects of development and formulation stability. You will bridge the gap between microbiological discovery and chemical formulation, also developing robust analytical methods (HPLC) to characterize our novel products. The position is initially offered on a 12-month fixed-term basis in our Deeside facility, with the possibility of extension or a permanent contract. The job holder will be an integral part of the team, ensuring development, evaluation of products for diagnostic microbiology, in line with regulatory requirements. The successful candidate shall actively engage and contribute their technical knowledge to aid the progression of portfolio development, bringing relevant products to successful manufacture and commercialisation.
- Be responsible, under the general supervision of the Departmental Manager for carrying out R&D activities and contracted non-clinical laboratory studies, supporting the development of high-performance microbiology products in line with quality and regulatory standards.
- Optimizing formulations and processes for improved stability and/or performance and cost-effectiveness.
- Prepare and present written development reports, validation reports, test reports and documents as directed, including Standard Operating Procedures, product technical files demonstrating product compliance with regulatory standards or directives, and reports and documents for company policy and other meetings. Such reports should usually be presented in an appropriate electronic format (e.g. Microsoft Word) and be suitable for inspection for external audit purposes.
- Participate in non-clinical GLP review, and specific meetings as requested by senior management or project sponsors, to discuss progress on the non-clinical studies undertaken.
- Develop, validate and embed analytical methods for testing of manufactured AST Diagnostic Devices and bespoke products developed during contracted non-clinical laboratory studies primarily, but not restricted to, HPLC analysis of antibiotic content.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of results ensuring appropriate traceability from sample to raw data through to analysed results and including meticulous upkeep of a lab book containing detailed notes of all laboratory procedures undertaken.
- Overview HPLC laboratory equipment and other analytical devices that may be specified in future including preparation of validated standard operating procedures for routine operation, cleaning and maintenance of Analytical equipment
- Develop, validate and embed analytical methods for testing of antibiotic content of existing AST products manufactured by Mast Group Ltd.
- Support training of other laboratory staff at all levels in techniques and proper use of specialised analytical equipment such as HPLC
- Effectively transfer analytical methodology into routine quality control operations
- Provide technical training including oral presentations on courses held at Mast House, for sales and marketing, and laboratory personnel.
- Act as an internal advisor on chemistry related issues
- Identify areas within the R&D, QC or manufacturing departments where analytical equipment can be applied to improve current processes and implementation of use of such equipment when approved by senior leadership
- Ensure analytical equipment is maintained to required standard to ensure fit for purpose
In addition to the specified duties the Analytical Development Scientist is expected to perform additional tasks that the company may require.
THE PERSON
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or a closely related field. Previous laboratory work experience based on use of a range of analytical chemistry equipment in particular HPLC and HPLC method development
- Familiarity with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
- Strong interest in microbiology and a basic understanding of its principles is a plus.
- Ability to use various computer and other MS packages
- Proven ability to work to deadlines
- Attention to detail is a must
- Experience of using various laboratory equipment
- Ability to work alone or as part of a team
- Undertake training to improve skills
