Emmaus Cambridge is looking for an Operations Assistant to join our Operations Team, with responsibility for working alongside supporting and supervising companions within all areas of the social enterprise. Our site comprises of accommodation for up to 48 companions, a large retail shop and coffee shop as well as a donation hub, smaller retail spaces, residential, warehouses, workshop and office spaces and extensive grounds.
Our social enterprise generates the majority of the income required to run our community, whilst also provide meaningful work, training, and confidence building opportunities for our Companions.
The ideal candidate will have experience of working within a retail, logistics, warehouse or related environment. You will have excellent customer service and communication skills and the ability to inspire and motivate others, whilst maintaining professional boundaries.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Chief Operations Officer you will work within the Operations Team to ensure the smooth running of the social enterprise.
Main Responsibilities:
- Work in all areas of the social enterprise to support, coach and supervise companions, including:
o Sorting textiles
o Shop floor
o Warehouse including the (movement of heavy goods)
o Donations Hub (greeting customers and sorting donations)
o Electrical shop
o Collections and deliveries
o House clearances
o Occasional market stalls typically over weekends
o Online sales
o Tills/handling cash and providing excellent customer service
- Ensuring the shop floor is always well stocked with well displayed merchandise that is priced in line with Emmaus guidelines
- Identifying potentially valuable items for valuation/auction/online selling
- Handling and moving the delivery of furniture and other donations
- Identifying unsaleable donations for recycling
- Undertaking duties to open and close the social enterprise including setting up tills
- Promoting the concept of ‘solidarity’
- Be a positive role model for companions and the Emmaus movement
- Drive vehicles (up to 3.5 tonne), as required, on and off site
- Act as a key holder opening and securing premises as required
Community Support Activities:
- Assist with integrating companions into the social enterprise
- Ensure appropriate sharing of information related to companions with the staff team
- Support with the progression of companions, working with the support team where necessary
- Assist with the ongoing monitoring in accordance with community licenses, including random drug testing and use of a breathalyser
- Adhere to the Emmaus ethos and apply community rules fairly and consistently
- Undertake ‘on-call’ duties as required, training will be provided
Collaboration and Communication:
- Actively participate in morning meetings, staff meetings, community meetings and contribute to decision making and the overall community
- Attend meetings and liaise with external agencies as necessary
- Active involvement in the delivery of the Emmaus Cambridge strategic plan
- Working alongside companions supporting their training and development
- Work alongside a combination of paid staff, volunteers and other agencies
- To communicate effectively and appropriately with companions and staff to ensure effective operations and companion development
