Fireplace & Stove Installer / Builder (Construction Experience Required)
SweepSmart – Welwyn Garden City
£30,000 – £52,500+ per year (depending on experience)
This is a niche trade and a genuinely interesting one to get into. Chimneys and fireplaces sit right in the core of a property and working on them requires specialist knowledge that most construction trades never develop.
As a result, you quickly become an expert in something very few people truly understand. The work is varied too — one day you might be installing a stove in a Victorian terrace, the next working on a large country house or carrying out chimney repairs on a period property.
We are looking for someone with solid construction experience who can develop into running jobs independently. You don’t necessarily need direct experience installing fireplaces or stoves, as we can train and support you with that, but you do need the practical building skills and confidence to carry out installation work to a high standard.
Just as importantly, we’re a small team and we genuinely enjoy working together. Character matters a lot to us. We’re looking for someone reliable, easy to get along with and someone who takes pride in their work.
Salary
£30,000 – £52,500+ depending on experience and capability.
There is a wide salary range because it depends on the level you join at. Someone with strong relevant experience who can confidently run installations will naturally start towards the higher end.
However, we are also open to experienced tradespeople who may need some training in the fireplace and stove side of the work before running jobs independently.
A significant part of earnings can come from commission. The larger and more complex the jobs you are able to complete, the more you can earn — so the salary is not capped.
Key qualities we’re looking for
- Good character and a team player
- Solid construction experience and practical ability
- Pride in workmanship and attention to detail
- Reliable and professional when working in customers’ homes
Because we are a small team, personality and attitude are genuinely important.
Experience & Skills
- Construction or builder experience essential
- Experience as a multi-trader or multi-skilled tradesperson highly desirable
- Brickwork experience highly desirable
- Plastering experience a strong advantage
- Fireplace or stove installation experience a major advantage
- HETAS qualification highly desirable
- Gas Safe qualification a strong advantage
- Full UK driving licence preferred
Fireplace and stove installation uses a combination of construction skills, particularly brickwork and plastering, so experience in these areas is especially valuable.
Working at height
A significant part of this role involves working at height.
This includes accessing chimneys on roofs using ladders and roof ladders. We always take safety seriously and follow safe working practices, but this work regularly involves being at height on residential properties.
Applicants must therefore have genuine experience working at height in a construction environment. Being comfortable with heights alone is not enough — experience working safely at height as part of building, roofing or similar construction work is important.
A typical day
Most days start at our unit in Welwyn Garden City, where you will collect materials, load the van and meet your colleague for the day.
We normally work in teams of two.
From there you will travel to site to carry out installations, chimney repairs or fireplace work. Our jobs cover London, Hertfordshire and Essex, so travelling into London is a normal part of the role.
Typical work might include:
- Installing wood burning or multi-fuel stoves
- Fireplace alterations and installations
- Flue liner installations
- Chimney repairs and building work
- Hearth installations and finishing works
- Chimney sweeping and inspection work
- General chimney and fireplace maintenance
Every property is different, which keeps the work varied and interesting.
