Junior Solar Designer
Location: Office based
Salary: £22,880 – £28,000 initially, with clear scope to increase as skills, capability and responsibility develop
Company: Power Different Ltd
Role type: Full-time
About the role
Power Different is looking for a highly motivated, detail-focused and ambitious person to join our design team as a Junior Solar Designer.
This is an office-based role with significant scope for career progression. No previous experience in the renewable energy sector is required, but you must be confident with computers, quick to learn new systems, highly organised and genuinely motivated to develop your skills. We are looking for someone with a strong work ethic, a positive attitude and the hunger to grow into a more senior technical role over time.
This is not a sales role, but you will work closely with and support both the design and sales teams.
At Power Different, solar design is not simply drawing panels on a roof. Careful design is one of the most important parts of what we do. Our clients rely on us to help them make informed, commercially sound decisions about solar, and that means our work must be accurate, considered and based on proper data.
You will be trained to use leading solar design tools, analyse detailed electricity consumption data, support feasibility studies and help produce designs that allow clients to understand what solar can truly deliver for their business. This includes looking at energy usage, system performance, shading, roof space, electrical considerations, projected savings and return on investment.
What you’ll be doing
You will work closely with our design and sales teams, receiving training and support as your knowledge develops. Your responsibilities will include:
- Learning and using industry-leading solar design software.
- Supporting the preparation of solar PV designs for commercial clients.
- Reviewing electricity consumption data and helping assess how solar can support a client’s energy needs.
- Assisting with feasibility studies, savings calculations and system performance modelling.
- Producing accurate drawings, layouts and supporting design documentation.
- Helping the sales team with technical information for client proposals.
- Checking details carefully to ensure designs are accurate, practical and commercially sensible.
- Learning how shading, orientation, roof layout, equipment selection and energy usage affect system performance.
- Supporting the wider team with office-based technical and administrative tasks.
- Developing your understanding of commercial solar, battery storage and the wider renewable energy sector.
What we’re looking for
We are looking for someone with the right mindset first and foremost. Technical skills can be taught, but attitude, discipline and attention to detail are essential.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Excellent computer skills.
- Confidence using Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
- The ability to learn new software quickly.
- Strong attention to detail.
- A logical and methodical approach to work.
- Good communication skills.
- A willingness to ask questions, take feedback and improve.
- Strong organisational skills.
- A genuine desire to build a career, not just take a job.
- A positive, can-do attitude.
- The drive to progress into more senior roles as your skills develop.
Previous experience in solar, CAD, design software, data analysis, construction, electrical work or engineering would be useful, but it is not essential. We are more interested in finding the right person with the right attitude and potential.
