Star Throwers is a cancer support charity based in Wymondham.
The primary task of the Star Throwers Counselling service is the provision of free counselling for adults over 18 years who are:
· Diagnosed with cancer
· Affected by a cancer diagnosis – family member, carer or friend
· Bereaved by cancer
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Counsellor to join our charity on a self-employed basis for 8 hours a week. Days and times are negotiable for the right candidate.
Counselling offers an opportunity for individuals affected by cancer to talk and be heard in a safe, non-judgmental environment. The expression of fear and anxiety can benefit mental and physical well-being. The counsellor’s role in this process is to aid the individual in ways that respect his/her/their values and capacity for self-determination.
Counselling sessions will be offered in person at the Star Thrower’s Centre face-to-face. It may also be possible to offer zoom, hybrid working to accommodate patient needs.
Responsibilities
- Conduct confidential counselling sessions with clients, listening empathetically and providing appropriate guidance.
- Develop personalised support plans tailored to individual needs and circumstances.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of client progress and session notes in compliance with data protection regulations.
- Stay informed about current best practices in counselling and mental health support through ongoing professional development.
- Uphold ethical standards and confidentiality at all times, ensuring a safe environment for clients.
Skills
- Proven experience or training in counselling or related fields.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and rapport with diverse clients.
- Excellent active listening and communication abilities.
- Organised with the capacity to manage multiple cases simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail.
- Empathy, patience, and a non-judgemental attitude are essential qualities for success in this role.
- All counsellors are committed to maintaining their competence through on-going professional development and self-care.
- All counsellors will undergo Disclosure and Barring Service checks.
- Any trainee counsellors will be in their final year
