We are seeking a Speciality Doctor in Oral & Maxilliofacial Surgery to join our team at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust for a 12-month fixed term period to cover maternity leave. There is a potential for this post to become permanent after the fixed-term period.
The duties of the post, as directed by the Consultants will include:
Assessment of patients in Outpatients, the Day Case Unit and on the ward
Administrative work arising from outpatient and surgical activity
Provision of principally dentoalveolar surgery under GA, LA and possibly IV sedation
Supervision of SHOs in outpatients, minor operative surgery and theatre
Teaching and mentoring of SHOs
Organisation of presentations by SHO’s of cases at clinico-pathology meeting, radiology meetings and audit meetings
Participation in Audit and Research
On call
There is no regular on call commitment with this post.

The successful applicant will be competent in all aspects of dentoalveolar surgery having completed at least 4 years of full time training in Oral Surgery (or its equivalent). The post holder will work mainly within the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery but will work closely with Consultants in Orthodontics and Restorative Dentistry. Joint Clinics are held for the management of Orthognathic surgery, Restorative Dentistry including Implantology and Head & Neck Cancer. There is the opportunity to develop a special interest to fit with the needs of the department.
Detailed job description and responsibilities
As a Specialty Grade Doctor/Dentist you will work together with Dental Core Trainees and other middle grades, under the supervision of Consultants, to provide in-patient and out-patient care to patients in the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Unit. You will gain experience in the management of minor oral surgery, maxillofacial and dento-alveolar trauma, head and neck cancer, skin cancer, thyroid and parathyroid surgical disease, orthognathic surgery, salivary gland surgery. There are also opportunities to take part in the Orthodontic and Restorative Dentistry services.
Your role will include the following:
Assisting in main theatre and day surgery for maxillofacial and oral surgical cases
Undertaking minor oral surgery lists (with supervision)
Managing patients attending the A&E Department with dental and maxillofacial emergency problems
Undertaking out-patient clinics
Taking an active part in the weekly teaching programme
Undertaking an audit project
Ideally you will be a motivated and enthusiastic dentist with a desire to broaden your experience in oral and maxillofacial surgery, and be part of a team delivering high quality services.
