Woven Bio | Sustainable Materials
Location: Near Dorking, Surrey
Woven Bio is building the UK’s leading platform for bio-based materials and circular manufacturing — transforming natural fibres, including pineapple, cellulose, wool and other agricultural by-products, with bio-based binders into high-performance composites. Our technology replaces fossil-based materials across packaging, mobility, interiors and advanced composites, combining sustainable materials with scalable, automated manufacturing.
We are looking for a Product Development Engineer to turn our materials technology into commercially ready products — taking concepts from initial CAD design through prototyping, tooling, testing and production.
This is a highly practical engineering role for someone who enjoys designing, making and improving physical products. You’ll work across CAD, additive manufacturing, tooling and prototyping, helping us rapidly develop packaging and composite products for customers and scale them into repeatable manufacturing.
Role Responsibilities
You’ll work closely with our design, materials, manufacturing and commercial teams to:
- Help develop 3D CAD models, assemblies and technical drawings for products, moulds, tooling and manufacturing equipment
- Translate customer requirements, sketches and concepts into manufacturable product designs
- Manage and operate our 3D printers, including print preparation, maintenance and optimisation
- Design and manufacture prototype and development tooling
- Build and iterate physical prototypes for packaging, mobility, interiors and advanced composite applications
- Support compression moulding, forming and composite manufacturing trials
- Apply Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) principles to transition prototypes towards production
- Develop dimensional tolerances, specifications and quality control procedures
- Inspect components and prototypes against CAD, drawings and customer requirements
- Identify product and manufacturing issues and implement practical design improvements
- Support mechanical and functional product testing and validation
- Maintain structured CAD files, drawings, BOMs, design revisions and technical documentation
- Work with suppliers and manufacturing partners on tooling, components and production equipment
- Support continuous improvement as products move from prototype to pilot and volume manufacture
- Contribute to documentation for Innovate UK projects, IP filings and quality systems
Who This Suits
We’re looking for someone who is:
- A practical engineer who enjoys designing and making physical products
- Confident using 3D CAD software and producing engineering drawings
- Experienced with, or enthusiastic about, 3D printing and rapid prototyping
- Comfortable working with tools, machinery, moulds and manufacturing equipment
- Able to think about manufacturability, tolerances, quality and cost as part of the design process
- Detail-oriented and capable of managing multiple product development projects
- Comfortable working in a fast-moving start-up where designs are rapidly built, tested and improved
- Interested in bio-based materials, composites, advanced manufacturing and sustainability
- Able to work primarily on-site near Dorking, Surrey
Experience in product design, mechanical engineering, composites, packaging, tooling, additive manufacturing or production engineering would be particularly valuable.
We care about practical engineering ability as much as job titles — we’re looking for someone who can take an idea in CAD, make it, test it, identify what is wrong and make the next version better.
