About the role

An opportunity has arisen for a qualified experienced radiographer to gain the relevant qualifications required to become a trust-wide advanced reporting practitioner. This individual will join the existing team of advanced radiographer practitioners reporting musculoskeletal with a future expectation to continue their training to become competent to report chest and abdominal images.

The radiographer reporting service at the Trust supports an immediate 12 hours, 7-day service and scope of practice includes all referral groups. The successful applicant would be expected to contribute to this pattern of work. The candidate will be expected to enrol on the image interpretation course at Bradford University, to gain a postgraduate certificate in MSK Reporting with the expectation of continuing this qualification to include chest and abdominal reporting. Once image interpretation qualification is achieved the candidate will qualify as a Radiography Advanced Practitioner, and remuneration at commensurate banding will be completed.

The service operates across all three hospital sites (Dewsbury, Pinderfields and Pontefract), and at the new Community Diagnostic Centre based in Wakefield, offering a number of diagnostic imaging investigations closer to home. This role is based at Pinderfields, but there is an expectation to work across all sites.

The posts current job plan comprises 70% reporting and 30% advanced practice duties to cover the other domains of advanced practice. The successful applicant will have high clinical standards, have evidence of leading audits and delivering training within radiology and will be aware and accept the challenges of delivering a high quality service during a period of significant change within the NHS.

Support in professional and reporting issues is provided by Consultant Radiographer and fellow Advanced Practitioners. There is a strong team ethos with professionals working closely together to develop effective patient pathways, improve service delivery and optimise patient experience. Radiology supports 7 day reporting within an extended day service and taking part in this rota is an expectation.

Excellent interpersonal skills are required with the ability to communicate effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary teams. Qualified advanced practitioners undertake the delivery of tutorials within the Trust, are proactive in QA issues and take a leading role in the delivery of audits. They are also required to provide clinical leadership and support for the general radiographers.

Main duties

To undertake a leadership role as part of the radiology team responsible for providing an efficient imaging service and ensuring high quality images. Undertake postgraduate academic and clinical education in image interpretation.

Based on a specific base site, but maintaining a rotation across the other Trust sites, the advanced practitioner will work with the consultant radiographer to provide leadership in general radiography and be responsible for his/her clinical work and professional development. To perform a comprehensive range of radiographic procedures, without supervision, both within the department and externally, e.g. Theatre, Wards.

A 7 day reporting service is already in operation at the MY trust and the post holder will be expected to contribute to the running of this service.

Develop the skills and expertise to independently interpret radiographs and support service and staff developments, the advancement of staff and skills and undertake reflective, evaluation of practice.

Key responsibilities

Professional

To maintain and enhance clinical expertise ensuring high technical and professional standards at all times.
To ensure imaging procedures are carried out in accordance with mandatory departmental systems of work and protocols.
To adapt technique to the condition of the patient and level of co-operation.
To assess each patient and request to produce the correct course of action for examination and diagnosis.
To initiate and advise on follow-up action where appropriate.
To contribute towards the development of departmental policies and protocols.
To contribute towards the implementation and development of quality assurance programmes including departmental audit.
To develop independent decision-making, including diagnostic and assessment skills
To undertake additional areas of responsibility as delegated by the Team Leader or Consultant Radiographer.

Organisational

To prioritise the workload of patients with acute illness or injury.
To deputise for the Consultant Radiographers
To supervise radiographic staff and student radiographers.
To assist in the delivery of quality assurance programmes.

Communication

To communicate verbally and in writing the final clinical reports on radiography examinations to referring clinicians.
To communicate verbally the results of examinations to patient and their carers of varying abilities and understanding.
To provide patients with advice on the management and treatment of soft tissue injuries in accordance with the appropriate care pathway.
To participate in clinical multidisciplinary team meetings.
To discuss own practice with peers and work effectively as part of the evolving radiology team
to build and maintain good relationships with other departments and disciplines working together to develop service improvements, including in clinical multidisciplinary meetings

Technical

To ensure the safe use of x-ray and associated equipment.
To report equipment malfunctions and to help maintain comprehensive and accurate records of faults, ensuring that staff are kept up to date as to the working status of equipment.
To have an understanding of IR(ME)R and IRR2017 regulations; working closely with the Radiation Protection Supervisors to continuously evaluate and monitor systems and practices.
To function as a Practitioner under the IR (ME) R regulations.
To have a good working knowledge of the Radiology Information System.
To input patient details and reports on the computer system.

BSc (Hons) Radiography or DCR(R)
HPC Registered

Experience

Post graduate experience in diagnostic radiography
Evidence of a comprehensive range of radiographic experience.
Experience of managing complex clinical situations.
Ability to protocol and manage complex referrals.
Experience of clinical audit.
Experience of contribution towards management of workloads and resources.
Evidence of participating in out of hours radiography service
