About the Company
We are a small and growing structural engineering consultancy working mainly on residential and small to medium-scale building structural projects.
As the business develops, we are looking to bring in someone who can take on a key role supporting project delivery and help share how we work going forward.
Role Overview
This is a hands-on, varied role combining CAD work, project support and some involvement in engineering and site-based activities.
We are looking for someone who is comfortable working independently and taking ownership of their work. This isn’t a heavily managed role – the successful candidate will be expected to get on with tasks, manage their time and take responsibility for the quality and organisation of their output.
The role will involve working closely with the Director, so there will be exposure to all parts of the job. From drawings and coordination through to site visits during construction.
Key Responsibilities
CAD and Technical Delivery:
- Producing and managing AutoCAD drawings for structural projects
- Preparing plans, sections and construction details from sketches and mark-ups
- Taking ownership of drawing quality, consistency and presentation
- Applying and adapting standard details with accuracy
- Checking drawings thoroughly before issue
Project and Site Support
- Supporting the delivery of projects from early stages through to construction
- Assisting with coordination between drawings, calculations and other project information
- Attending site visits, surveys or inspections where required
- Helping resolve practical issues that arise during design or construction
- Supporting general day-to-day project tasks within a small business
Document Control and Organisation
- Managing drawing revisions, updates and issue records
- Maintaining organised digital file structures and naming conventions
- Preparing and issuing drawing and calculation packs
- Keeping project information clear, consistent and easy to follow
Engineering Support and Development
- Assisting with technical design and calculations where appropriate
- Supporting development of design solutions alongside the Director
- Gradually taking on more technical responsibility as experience grows
Digital and Workflow Improvement
- Using digital tools effectively to manage drawings and project information
- Helping improve how drawings, files and information is stored
- Identifying opportunities to streamline workflows or automate repetitive tasks
- Bringing a practical mindset to improving efficiency within a small business
Essential Skills & Experience
- 1-2 years’ experience in a CAD Technician or similar role within construction / engineering
- Strong AutoCAD skills (layers, blocks, layouts, references etc)
- Time management and working to deadlines, organisation and customer care skills
- Good understanding of construction drawings and detailing
- Ability to work independently and manage workload without close supervision
- Strong attention to detail and a practical approach to problem solving
- Confident communication and a professional, straightforward manner
- Comfortable using digital tools and managing project information
- Understanding of UK Building Regulations and construction methods
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Experience in structural or residential projects
- Exposure to calculations or engineering design work
- Revit or other 3D modelling software
- Site experience or interest in site-based work
- CSCS card
- CDM Regulations
- First Aid at work
- Report writing skills
- Experience dealing with contractors
- Surveying techniques
- Project management
Qualifications
- HNC/HND degree or equivalent in: Civil / Structural engineering, Architectural Technology or Construction / Built Environment
- Or, demonstratable experience
Personal Attributes
- Acute attention to detail
- Self-motivated and comfortable working in a stand-alone role
- Take ownership and responsibility for their work
- Practical, organised and solution-focused
- Willing to learn and develop over time
- Adaptable and comfortable working in a small, growing business
Progression and Development
This work is not limited to AutoCAD drawings.
There is clear scope over time to become more involved in technical design, calculations and engineering decision-making, depending on experience and how the candidate develops.
For the right person, this can evolve into a more senior technical or engineering role as the business grows.
