We’re seeking an experienced Lead Grower to work closely with the nursery team. This experienced role will manage all of the growing production on the nursery – leading the team to produce large quantities of plants for the current and forthcoming season and manage plugs, plant health & irrigation. You will set best practice regarding quality and take the initiative to plan and organise a broad variety of growing activities, including managing space-utilisation across the nursery. You’ll have overall responsibility for the growing and care of plants from seed or cutting to finished product on the nursery, to ensure sowing, plugs, pot and pack plants are monitored, watered and sprayed as required along with regular checks for pest and disease.
About You:
As the lead growers it will be advantageous that you have PA1 and PA6 licences and good knowledge of bedding plants and herbaceous perennials.
This role is physically demanding and largely hands on, greenhouse based – you will have a hands-on approach, not just delegating to your team but helping carry out duties and checks day to day. Being a team player and being happy to work alongside the other team members is expected.
Key Responsibilities
· Ensuring that all parts of the crop are being monitored and cared for on a daily basis. There is access to an agronomist if there are questions or queries but it is expected you will have a good understanding of plant health issues and challenges.
· Manage plant health, including arranging or carrying out spraying and watering.
· Work closely with the wider team to plan potting and planting of plugs and the growing areas and space for growing on.
· Work with the wider team to ensure plants are meeting the high spec for delivery to our customers.
· Maintain inventory and managing stock of necessary supplies
· Implement and enforce safety and health regulations
Skills & Experience: Essential & Beneficial
· Essential: Several years’ experience in a lead grower role or similar
· Essential: Relevant Horticulture experience, including PA1//PA6 spraying license
· Essential: Forklift and Telehandler experience
· Essential: Planning and scheduling large-scale Horticulture production activities
Pay: £30,000.00-£35,000.00 per year
