Job Description
Shape the future of policing technology. Drive innovation. Deliver impact where it matters most.
We’re seeking a skilled, motivated, and forward-thinking Technical Architect to join our Enterprise Architecture team within the collaborative Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire (BCH) ICT Department.
This is more than just an architecture role, it’s an opportunity to work at the forefront of modern policing technology, influencing how critical systems are designed, secured and delivered to support front-line officers and operational services.
The Role
Working alongside Principal Technical Architect, you will play a pivotal role in designing and delivering secure, resilient, and scalable technology solutions across a diverse portfolio of major change initiatives, from local digital transformation through to regional and national platforms.
You will:
Develop target architecture and solution designs aligned to business and operational needs, balancing performance, scalability, usability and security
Work across complex, integrated technology landscapes, ensuring solutions are coherent, supportable and aligned to enterprise and national standards
Act as a trusted technical advisor, providing guidance to delivery teams, SMEs, suppliers, and stakeholders, including initiatives outside formal Enterprise Architecture governance
Support the adoption of innovative and emerging technologies to enhance policing capability and efficiency
Crucially, you will operate with delegated authority to make solution-level architectural decisions, analysing technical constraints, resolving complex design challenges, and actively managing technical risk to ensure solutions are robust, supportable, and aligned to enterprise principles.
Through your work, you will help ensure that technology delivers real operational value, improves resilience, and supports the critical services that keep our communities safe.
Why Join BCH ICT?
You’ll join a collaborative, ambitious, and purpose-driven ICT function, where your work directly impacts public safety and operational effectiveness.
We offer:
Competitive salary + Market Rate supplement of 31.42% (reviewed periodically and subject to change)
Hybrid and flexible working arrangements
Choice of base location: Kempston, Huntingdon or Welwyn Garden City
Local Government Pension Scheme
Access to on-site gym facilities at HQ locations
Access to Blue Light Card and associated discounts
Employee Assistance Programme
A culture that actively supports innovation, inclusion, and continuous professional development
About You
We’re looking for a confident and capable technologist who thrives on solving complex problems and influencing outcomes.
You will bring:
Broad technical knowledge with a passion for learning and continuous improvement
Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage and influence both technical and non-technical stakeholders
The ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, multi-stakeholder environment
Proven experience in architecture design, systems integration, and delivering complex technical solutions
Experience within complex, security-focused or highly regulated environments would be advantageous.

Additional Advert Information
All internal applicants must have successfully completed their probationary period to apply for this role.
Please note - If you qualify as an internal candidate for this role with the force that is advertising then Internal applicants can upload either a CV or the internal role summary form attached to the advert.
Please be advised that as part of the Vetting Process the BCH Vetting Unit may be required to contact your current line manager for a Supervisor Appraisal. This is in line with the 2025 National Guidelines for Vetting (APP 6.5.18). Please see examples below of when this would be a necessary requirement:
When an individual is applying to transfer forces
When an individual is having their vetting renewed
When an individual is moving into a role that needs MV clearance, even if they are already in a role that requires MV
When an individual is moving into or already in a role working closely with vulnerable individuals

This vacancy is live to those at risk of redundancy and will remain open to redeployees until a final offer has been agreed with a successful candidate and accepted by them.
Redeployees at risk of redundancy will take priority over all other applicants at any point during the recruitment process. If a redeployee does apply and is successful, they will remain on their home force’s terms and conditions.
It is recommended that you download and store a copy of the role profile as this will no longer be available once the advert has closed.
