About The Role
We are looking for an energetic and brilliant senior writer who can combine tenacious fact-getting with elegant writing to produce in-depth reported features that break lines in a gripping narrative. An ability to demonstrate both reporting and writing skill is key, and the best mix of both will see the right candidate entrusted with high priority stories and projects for the paper both light and dark in tone. The ability to suggest engaging reported feature subjects, and the lines to pursue, is the third key attribute we are looking for.
Key Responsibilities
-
Reporting on, and writing, a range of features, with a focus on in-depth narrative pieces where we are looking to break new ground.
-
An ability to report on the ground as well as from the office, identifying, suggesting and pursuing potentially fruitful lines of enquiry, gathering vox-pops and interviews and uncovering new information, to form the basis of written pieces.
-
Shaping that information into elegant, detailed pieces that hook the readers then keep them gripped to the end.
-
Suggesting ideas to the features team both for stories to pursue yourself, and ideas for others.
-
Working with others - eg the investigations team, news reporters, other feature writers - on stories that, whether through time imperatives or scale, require a team effort.
Key Skills
- Essential: Brilliant reporting skills, with an ability to uncover new facts.
-
Essential: An ability to shape that information into compelling pieces.
-
Essential: An ability to suggest features and see lines and angles to take in covering them
-
Desirable: While this is primarily a reported feature role, senior writers can be asked to undertake high-profile interviews and write analytical essays. Talent in interview writing and analytical essays is of course desirable.
