What: This role involves taking the lead on nurse consultations in a busy first opinion hub practice, working with the Head Nurse to improve clinical standards and enhance client care.

Where: Mercer & Hughes is a well-established group of small animal practices with a hub in Saffron Walden and branches in Great Dunmow, Stanstead and Bocking.

Who: We’re looking for a confident Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) with experience in consultations who can build strong relationships with their clients.

Why: Set in the beautiful market town of Saffron Walden, this practice provides a high level of on-site care to its clients, including orthopaedic and laparoscopic surgery, advanced diagnostic procedures, and inpatient care.

About Us

Mercer & Hughes is a well-established group of small animal veterinary clinics, with three branches in Great Dunmow, Bocking, and Stanstead all feeding into the hub in Saffron Walden. The four practices work hand in hand to provide exceptional care to their clients and patients, with the three branches providing routine first opinion care, and the hub providing advanced surgery (including orthopaedic and laparoscopic procedures), advanced medical workups and round-the-clock inpatient care.

As part of a growing group of veterinary practices, we’re dedicated to creating a supportive and collaborative environment where both our clients and team members thrive.

We are seeking a Consulting RVN to take the lead in our nurse clinics, growing and developing this service that we offer to clients.

The Role

This is an exciting opportunity for an RVN looking for a consult-focused role. This would include second vaccinations, weight clinics, dental clinics, post-op checks, puppy and kitten clinics, and senior pet clinics, as well as any further concepts that you would look to develop.

The role also involves managing the practice’s pharmacy and in-house laboratory, managing stock levels and preventing waste.

Other general nursing duties (e.g. anaesthesia, inpatient care) will be involved from time to time, mostly as part of the weekend rota.

You will be responsible for:

Designing and delivering engaging nurse-led clinics
Providing outstanding patient and client care, with a strong focus on preventative healthcare.
Managing stock control, including ordering, rotation, and monitoring of medications and consumables, lab and maintaining pharmacy areas to a high standard.
Working closely with the Head Nurse and Clinical Director to support the smooth running of daily veterinary and nurse consultations.
Maintaining high clinical standards, helping to develop and implement to best practice protocols.

About You

A Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) with a passion for client education and preventative healthcare and experience in nurse-led consults.
Highly organised, proactive, and confident in managing stock systems.
A strong team player with excellent communication skills.
Enthusiastic about taking initiative and developing new nurse-led clinic ideas.

Salary & Benefits

Salary £30k per annum (pro-rata).
