Full job description

The Environmental Health Professional is responsible for ensuring that the organisation complies with all relevant food safety, environmental health, public health, and health and safety legislation. The role involves developing and implementing compliance systems, carrying out regular inspections and audits, monitoring food hygiene standards, assessing environmental risks, and advising senior management on legal and operational requirements. The post holder will work closely with operational teams to maintain the highest standards of food safety, hygiene, environmental protection, and regulatory compliance across all business locations.

Develop, implement, and maintain food safety and environmental health management systems.
Ensure full compliance with UK food hygiene legislation, health and safety regulations, and environmental protection laws.
Conduct routine inspections and internal audits of restaurants, takeaways, kitchens, food preparation areas, storage facilities, and operational sites.
Carry out risk assessments and recommend corrective and preventative actions.
Monitor HACCP procedures and ensure they are effectively implemented throughout the business.
Develop and review food safety policies, environmental policies, and standard operating procedures.
Investigate food safety incidents, customer complaints, accidents, and environmental concerns, preparing detailed reports and recommending improvements.
Liaise with Environmental Health Officers, local authorities, regulatory bodies, and external auditors during inspections.
Deliver training to managers and employees on food hygiene, environmental compliance, health and safety, infection control, waste management, and legal obligations.
Monitor pest control programmes, waste disposal systems, water hygiene, cleaning schedules, and sanitation standards.
Review supplier compliance and ensure purchased products meet food safety and quality standards.
Monitor environmental performance, including waste reduction, recycling initiatives, pollution prevention, and sustainability objectives.
Maintain accurate compliance records, inspection reports, training records, and regulatory documentation.
Support the senior management team in preparing for external inspections, audits, and accreditation assessments.
Keep up to date with changes in legislation and provide professional advice to management on regulatory requirements and industry best practice.
Promote a strong culture of food safety, environmental responsibility, and continuous improvement throughout the organisation.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

Degree in Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Public Health, Food Safety, or a related discipline.
Professional knowledge of UK food safety and environmental legislation.
Experience in environmental health, food safety compliance, regulatory inspections, or public health.
Excellent report writing, analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to manage multiple projects and work effectively with operational teams.
Strong knowledge of HACCP, food hygiene regulations, health and safety legislation, and environmental management systems.

Desirable Qualifications

Chartered status or membership of a recognised professional body.
Level 4 or above Food Safety qualification.
NEBOSH or IOSH Health and Safety qualification.
Experience within the hospitality, restaurant, takeaway, or food manufacturing sector.
Internal or Lead Auditor qualification.

Reporting To

Operations Director / Managing Director

Working Hours

Full-time, 37.5–40 hours per week (with flexibility to attend inspections and operational visits as required).

Salary

Competitive, depending on qualifications, experience, and business requirements.

Pay: Up to £42,000.00 per year
