Wellington School is seeking a Graduate Sports Assistant to join our Sport and Physical Health Department from September 2026. This exciting opportunity offers aspiring coaches and educators the chance to develop their skills while supporting pupils aged 3 - 18 across a wide range of sporting disciplines.
Working under the guidance of the Director of Sport and alongside an experienced and supportive department, you will play a key role in delivering an ambitious sporting programme that promotes participation, performance and lifelong wellbeing.
About the role
As a Graduate Sports Assistant, you will contribute to the delivery of sport and physical health across the School, supporting coaching, training, fixtures, events and pupil development.
You will work across a variety of sporting disciplines, helping pupils of all abilities to develop their confidence, skills and enjoyment of physical activity. This is a varied and rewarding role that provides excellent preparation for a future career in teaching, coaching or sports development.
Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting coaching provision across the School’s major sports programme, including Hockey, Netball, Rugby, Cricket, Athletics and other sports where appropriate
- Assisting with pre-season training and afternoon activity sessions throughout the week
- Supporting Physical Health lessons and promoting healthy, active lifestyles
- Attending and assisting with fixtures, tournaments and sporting events, including term-time Saturdays
- Managing teams when required, including team selection, officiating, hosting fixtures and producing match reports
- Supporting the Talented Athlete Pathway (TAP) programme alongside the Athletic Development Coach
- Assisting with athlete testing, performance monitoring and accurate data collection
- Supporting the safe operation of the School’s gym and fitness facilities
- Helping to organise and deliver sports events, competitions and enrichment activities
- Acting as a positive role model and contributing to the wider life of the School community
- Maintaining high standards of safeguarding, welfare and pupil supervision at all times
Required Skills & Experience:
The Graduate Sports Assistant should be an enthusiastic and committed individual with a genuine passion for sport and working with young people. A desire to inspire pupils and support their development is essential.
The successful candidate will ideally have:
- A degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline
- Experience of playing or coaching sport to a high standard (e.g. academy, county, regional, national or international level)
- Demonstrable expertise in at least one major school sport
- Strong organisational and analytical skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- The ability to build positive relationships with pupils aged 3 - 18
- Confidence working collaboratively with colleagues, parents and external organisations
- A proactive, flexible and team-oriented approach
Desirable:
- A coaching qualification in one or more school sports, or a willingness to work towards one
- Experience in strength and conditioning or athletic development
- D1 driving licence, or willingness to work towards obtaining one
