Full job description

The Star Project is looking for a passionate, inspiring, and dedicated Theatre School Musical Director to join our growing team.

This role involves leading vocal training and musical development across our theatre projects while supporting students in building confidence, technique, and performance ability through musical theatre training.

The successful candidate will teach vocal technique, lead harmonies and ensemble singing, accompany rehearsals using piano/keyboard, prepare and edit rehearsal tracks, and support productions musically throughout the year.

They will work closely with Project Leaders and Teaching Staff to help deliver high-quality rehearsals, workshops, Mainstage productions, and in-house performances.

This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about inspiring young performers, enjoys working collaboratively within a creative team, and is excited to grow within a supportive and ambitious theatre education company.

Pay

* £12.71 per hour for administration and creative preparation work

* £25–£30 per hour for teaching and in-project delivery depending on experience

* Additional show day pay would apply

* Self-employed/freelance position

Requirements

* Strong vocal and musical theatre knowledge

* Ability to accompany rehearsals and classes using piano/keyboard

* Confidence leading vocal rehearsals and ensemble singing

* Ability to edit and prepare rehearsal tracks using music editing software

* Strong communication and customer service skills

* Passion for theatre education and supporting young performers

* Organised, professional, and proactive attitude

* Ability to work collaboratively within a creative team

* Confident using emails, Google Drive, Dropbox, Microsoft Office, and social media platforms

* DBS check required

* Weekend availability during show periods required

Responsibilities

* Teaching and developing vocal technique

* Leading vocal warm-ups and rehearsals

* Teaching harmonies and ensemble singing

* Coaching students in musical theatre singing and performance

* Accompanying sessions using piano/keyboard

* Editing and preparing rehearsal and performance tracks

* Recording harmony and vocal support tracks where required

* Supporting auditions and vocal casting

* Supporting Mainstage Productions, workshops, rehearsals, and performances

* Working collaboratively with Project Leaders and Teaching Staff

* Supporting show preparation and organisation

* Maintaining high musical standards across productions and projects

Experience

* Experience teaching children and young people

* Experience leading vocal rehearsals and ensemble singing

* Experience within musical theatre or performing arts environments

* Experience supporting productions and performances

* Experience preparing or editing rehearsal materials and tracks

Desirable

* Driving licence

* Safeguarding experience

* First aid training

* Experience coaching musical theatre vocals

* Experience recording rehearsal tracks and harmony materials

* Interest in choreography and directing collaboration

Hours

Current in-project teaching hours include:

* Tuesday: Cofton Hackett, 5:00pm – 8:00pm

* Thursday: Barnt Green, 5:00pm – 8:00pm

* Saturday: Droitwich, 10:00am – 1:00pm

Additional administration and creative preparation hours will vary depending on business needs.

The role also includes attendance at rehearsals, productions, meetings, events, and show periods where required, with opportunities for future growth and additional hours within the company.
