Job Title: Assistant SENCO
Location: Oak Tree School, Truro, Cornwall TR4 9NH
Hours: 42.5 per week | Monday to Friday | 8.00am – 4.30pm
Salary: £31,500.00 per annum (not pro rata)
Contract: Permanent | Term Time Only
Start: September 2026

About the Role
The Assistant SENCo plays an important role in supporting the coordination and delivery of high‑quality SEND provision across the school. The role focuses on effective communication with families, staff, and external professionals, as well as ensuring that statutory EHCP processes are well organised, compliant, and completed within required timeframes. The Assistant SENCo also supports wider school operations and contributes to teaching, assessment, and staff development when required.
Key Responsibilities
Relationships & Communication
- Build strong working relationships with parents, carers, and families
- Liaise with Local Authority teams (SEND, CSC) and other professional agencies
- Work collaboratively with staff across the school
EHCP Annual Reviews
- Collate and share documentation for Annual Reviews within statutory timeframes
- Record and distribute Annual Review summary reports
- Manage and securely store EHCP information in line with GDPR
- Maintain an annual calendar of EHCP meetings
- Ensure timely communication regarding all EHCP processes
Additional Duties
- Support daily school operations as needed
- Assist the Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher, and Assistant Headteacher
- Support in‑school assessment processes
- Adhere to the organisation’s professional code of conduct
- Participate in ongoing professional development
- Undertake teaching or learning responsibilities when required
- Provide mentoring and support for trainee staff

The ideal candidate will have:
- Strong understanding and knowledge of the SENCo role
- An excellent communicator with strong organisational and interpersonal skills.
- Passionate about safeguarding, pupil wellbeing and securing outstanding outcomes.
- Collaborative and committed to working effectively with families and multidisciplinary teams.
- Reflective, resilient and dedicated to continuous professional development.

Oak Tree School in Truro has recently expanded and developed two new buildings and undergone a successful inspection from Ofsted allowing us to offer a wider age range of pupils from 5 – 18 years the opportunity to have the best education possible. Oak Tree School is a specialist SEMH provision positioned near the city of Truro in Cornwall. The school provides full-time specialist co-education for up to 135 pupils and young people aged 5 to 18 who experience social, emotional, mental health, communication difficulties and associated challenging behaviours. These pupils and young people often cannot cope, function or achieve within a mainstream environment. The aim is to provide a structured, nurturing approach, with pupils accessing a broad, balanced and engaging curriculum to meet their significant needs.
